and really want to know if anyone has any experiences of the country, specifically the resort of Porec?

Are there any Croatians on NS?

Zagreb's nice. That's the only place in Croatia I've been. Avoid taking taxis, they're very expensive. I have it on good authority that the Croatian coast is absolutely lovely, so you should probably have a good time. Oh, and English isn't *that* widely spoken (though you should fairly easily be able to find people who speak basic English), so brush up on your German. That could be different in tourist-y areas, I guess. Zagreb wasn't very tourist-y - only one hostel in the whole city.

I've been to that area a couple of times, but during the 1980s. I remember a breathtaking landscape, beautiful coast, yummy food, and lost of cultural sights all over the place. But I don't know how much of that all is left now.

From what I've heard you'll be fine. I've only passed through Croatia, in a car... So, I didn't see all that much. But many of my relatives have been there and its cool. I think you will be more than happy with your trip. :)

Anyways, I just looked Poreč up and it's real close to where my father served in the JNA. He served in Pula, not too far away.

Useless fact - in the 80's (I think) when my father served on the Pula military air base a Rumanian delegation was coming and they had to change the name of the city, Pula, to Pulla instead. Since, well, Pula means "vagina" in Rumanian.

Yeah, enough of me now.

My grandparents rate the coast city of Dubrovnik quite highly, and have been several times. So it can't be that bad.:)

I know two people who have family there and been to visit. They both rate Dubrovnik very highly, but i'm not sure what their opinions on the rest of the country are. (erm...they're both quite nationalistic, so probably just as high)

I was near Pula once and also saw a bit of Zagreb... the country is beautiful, the sea looks like a post-card and from what I experienced, the people were really friendly.

Thanks for all the info. I always like to get first hand experiences rather than believe the guff in brochures (although how seriously we should take some peoples advice is open to question:) )

Yeah I'm a croat, lived there the first years of my life but I've lived in Sweden for almoust whole my life.

The people in Croatia are very nice and hospital(if you're not a serb) but unfortunatelly the prices have gone up for almoust everything in tourist places. It's not a very cheap country but it's still pretty cheap to go out. A beer whould cost you 2$ or something like that in restaurants and clubs. Alcohol in general is very cheap and that's probably what's best with the country.

To be honest, I don't think that's really true any longer. I had no problem when I bought stuff in restaurants and shops when I was passing through last year. But then again, I have a very croat like last name (being croat far faaaar back and all).

Uh...do you realise when that was done? The song was hideously inaccurate even in its time. It splits up a fair few sovereign countries and forgets to mention some altogether. I still find it funny though.

I don't think you went in shops and said "Hi I'm a serb" so naturally they wouldn't see any difference but there's still lots of angry feelings left in the people.

I have been to Rovinj (Istria) and as far south as Tisno. I would not recommend to go too far inland when you go southwards. A few years ago most houses there still had marks from war (short history: serbs kicked croats out and then the croats kicked the serbs out, so double fighting). But the entire coastline is beautiful.

visit:

Plitvička Jezera, (Plitvice lakes) ABSOLUTELY fabulous. It has ann interesting history as it has been visited by many people.

although the entire country has been influenced by Italy (and especially Venetia) throughout history Istria is really topping the other regions. the cuisine and the people at the cafés proof this. the entire of Istria (with touristic cities like Pula, Poreč, Rovinj) is a must to visit. when you speak (in order of the fluency of the locals) Italian, German or English you should be fine. I also found some bartenders who spoke some "tourist terms" in Dutch.

as for my experiences with the prices... slightly cheaper to similar with Slovenia, lotsa cheaper than Austria

pictures (3 years old):
picture I've made of the Plitvice lakes
picture of me, my mum and my dog in front of the peninsular city Rovinj
picture of me, my father and my dog on the isle of ???. can you see the dark bits in the water? that's fresh water coming up from underground rivers

picture of one of the many galleries in one of the many alleys of Rovinj

I was there once, very beautiful landscape. Especially near the oceanfronts.

Although I found out you have better chances if you ask someone something in german, it seems more Croatians have a coherency in german then in english. Might not be true throughout all of Croatia, but the part of Zagreb I spent most of my time in it was the case.

If you think $2 for a beer is cheap, go to the Czech Republic. In central Prague we found a bar selling Staropramen for the equivalent of about 60 cents.

Czech beer is the best and one of the cheapest.
