Parrot's intelligence amazes scientists

A parrot with an extensive vocabulary has displayed an ability to react to new situations by inventing new words - "just as a human child would". He does not simply repeat words, but constructs sentences and uses them in appropriate contexts... and even appears to have a sense of humour.

His abilities would seem to put into question (yet again) the tenuous boundary between humans and other animals.

Some parrots live to be over a hundred right?

I thought I read somewhere that some birds and turtles (?) would never die from old age. It takes disease or physical damage.

Apparently all cells in all animals die pretty much yearly and are replaced. So no I dont think any 100 year old bird has 100 year old cells in them.

Nope. Their genetic structure apparently prevents that... It just happens to be disease and physical injury that eventually kills them.

egg cells maybe. i also don't know if nerve cells are replaced. it's also a mather of time until they develope some kind of cancer.

Oh yer right! I didn't know that. I guess nerve cells are the only ones that never get replaced when they die. It seems an 80 year old has about 3/4ths of the nerve cells with which they were born. I wonder why that is.

No one had any idea how long whales lived until recently.....Humpbacks are now known to live over 200yrs, top end is still unknown.......first suspicion of their age came when a whale was killed and when it was butchered they found a harpoon head from a previous hunt in it, a type of harpoon (stone) hadn't been used in over 200 yrs(how old was it when it was first hunted? ).....

Thats because by the time your 80 there is nothing new left to feel, and what you can feel usually hurts.

Well, humans never die of old age. What usually happens is that get pneumonia and their body can't fight it off and they die quickly.

tis tru that, its because the main chemical reaction that causes aging duznt happen fast enuf in tortoises to effect them (not sure about parrots)

then again if a human played his cards rite, he wudnt age either, apparently its possible wiv the rite amount of diet exercise mental activity stress motivation and of course isolation from all diseases

Technically, communication has nothing to do with intelligence, there are two completely different faculties. Animals cannot use language, animals cannot initiate conversation, nor can they use innovative communication, and any claim to the contrary is usually found to be flawed.

so a dog has to figure out how to communicate with his owner that he is hungry. He goes and gets his food dish and brings it to the owner. It didnt take intelligence for that dog to figure out how to communicate that he was hungry?

My cat likes to look out of the window of my bedroom. When he wants me to open the blinds he will sit at the window and look at me. It's obvious what he wants. I open the window and he says thanks and does his thing.

I think it does take intelligence for animals to figure out the best way to communicate what they want to humans. Any claim to the contrary is usually found to be flawed.

Some birds seem to indulge in “intelligent” play. The kea, a New Zealand parrot, has been filmed ripping (inedible) windscreen wipers off cars. Young keas, in a neat variation of ringing the doorbell and running away, are known to drop rocks on roofs to make people run outside.
