What system of punishment should we have? There's alot of crime nowadays:mp5: , so we need an efficient system of punishment.
I prefer mocking noobs who insist on using the gun smilies in their first few posts.

Well, you beat me to it. I was going to suggest making them read several threads with abundant use of gun smileys.

No? I don't think I've ever used gun smilies either, nor the upyours one. I've always found them too crude for my taste. Still, there's a first time for everything.

You live in America, where they have an effective system of punishment. Unfortunately, I live in Canada, where 1st degree murder means less than 10 years in prison if you behave well. I agree, the US doesn't need to change much, but Canada DOES!

Our crime rate is much lower than the US,... maybe you should check into reality once in a while...

Punishment? A system of wedgies, depantsings and/or groin kicks depending on the nature of the offender and/or offense.

Depends on the type of crime

Violent crime seems higher
Though other crime like robbery and more specifically aggravated assault. Is lower by a good margin.

:) I mean I am not saying the op is justified in any way but the two countries kind of swap it up depending on the crime
And they both fluctuate over time
Personally in the surveys I have done economics have a massive impact on crime ... actually often more then punishment schemes

Better to have an excellent system of rehabilitation than an excellent system of punishment methinks.
The most efficient system of punishment is the one that deters crime.
And you need punishment for that. Rehabilitation (assuming it works, and it won't on most rational criminals) only reduces recidivism.

I think we should institue the boo- box [from Hook] as a form of punishment. Think about it. Would you shoplift if you would be put in a box full of scorpions.
I'm all for creative punishments. It keeps ciminals on their toes.

In civilised countries, most of us have one. Flawed as they may be, they do the job.
However, the aim of a government should be to reduce crime, not simply punish criminals. That means that they need to put effort into rehabilitation, education and social services in order to prevent the temptation to turn to crime.

I think excess gun smileys are an excellent punishment. Thus, everyone is on topic. And who am I to resist the zeitgeist:

We need a new system of punishment? Ok. I propose genital papercuts.

But the point of punishment is to reduce crime - through deterrence.
