Given the current state of Christianity, is it any wonder so many people are disenfranchised from it?

The scandals, the birth-control issues, the radical examples on television denouncing vehemently against anything that they disagree with..

Theres a line from "Dogma" that goes "You people dont celebrate your faith, you mourn it."

Take a listen to the average Catholic Mass.
Its so incredibly boring, it sounds like a funeral for Jesus, every single time.
This isnt celebrating the life "God" gave you...its mourning the loss of an abstract concept, wich is ridiculous in and of itself.

Why would anyone want to join the "Eternally despondent Jesus moaners"?

Not every religious person ascribes to messianic cults, or even judaic monotheism. Hell, a lot of us don't really have much interest in organizations stripped of tradition or ceremony lead by men in purple dresses.

I, too, am very religious. I respect Judaism greatly, but I am a Christian.

curious, if you are a christian how could you respect judaism. Or, to put it another way, how would you respect a faith that is fundamentally opposed to your own, that disagrees with its most basic premise?

It's sort of like "I respect jews...they're just wrong". Sorta how a parent might respect a child.

I find it difficult to believe you respect the faith while at the same time saying things like this:

I will be praying for you. I truly hope you will accept Christ as the Lord, so you can be saved. Christianity is confusing when you don't believe, but you will understand it if you accept it. I repeat, I will pray for you. I pray that God will bless you.

Kreynoria;12165758']No, I'm just curious because I see all these conservative-bashing religion-bashing threads. I hang around a lot but don't post much.

modern american "conservatives" hold nearly no "conservative" religious values. I paraphased the sermon on the mount once and got called a marxist for it, on this forum. most "conservatives" hold religious ideals that are less than 200 years old. biblical literalism, for example, is not a historically grounded practice within the christian tradition - and hardly any other religions think their sacred texts are literal, factual histories. metaphor is dozens of times more important and useful than fact, as far as religious experience goes.

That's cos most of us are liberal and/or atheist. IMS.

again, I am extremely religious, and my opinions on ethical positions would be perfectly familiar to any number of people thousands of years ago - there's nothing *new* about my views, which by definition makes them "conservative", but I disagree with nearly all modern "conservatives"...and a large chunk of modern "liberals" too. most liberals are slaves of fashion. people who are atheists in modern america would just as likely have been militant religious fanatics in a culture where that was in vogue... but I digress...my point is that "liberal" and "conservative" are kind of dysfunctional words in the context of religious tradition. the franciscan order holds extremely traditional and dictionary-conservative values, but if they were to apply them in a political arena, they'd be denounced as leftist extremists.

i believe in being honest about not knowing what we don't know and in loving that very mistery and wierdness of it being things that we don't and are intrinsicly unlikely to be able to know.

and i'm not saying that as any sort of put on or anything.

what most of us "bash" is when people use their rigid view of the wrold to try and tell everyone else how to live. Eg. People who don't like gay marriage shouldn't get involved with one is my viewpoint. I am not gay, therefor I won't tell gay people who they may love. I do not however think it it is my right to "save the children" from the horrible calamity that is homosexuality. After all, homoseuxals all are sexual devient who want to rape our children and turn them into honmosecual atheists. Oh, and God hates them right? Does that clear up the issue or make it more cloudy?

I don't see why you have to be athiest to be a liberal. I'm a Catholic, and I'm somewhat religious, but I don't agree with conservative policies or values, so I'm much more liberal minded. For instance, my mom is an uber-catholic religious type, but even she is a registed member of the ontario liberal party, and even used to campaign for them.
