2 workplace truths

Got some advice for some of you young people when you enter the workforce.

It's not "what" as it is "who"
There will always be a boss's pet who can burn the place down and get a promotion. There will be the 6-time Employee Of The Month getting sent off for littering.

Neopotism (preferential hiring of relatives) is going to happen. Get over it. Even if you're the right arm of the firm, they're gonna fire you before they fire the CFO's daughter who cannot even count.

Your "work performance" isn't about how much work you do, as it is who likes you and who you're connected with.

Truth does not matter; paperwork does
As long as the paperwork is convincing, you can get away with almost anything.

Any of you want to add a few more work-place truthisms of your own?

There are two words that if they exist make all of that less important.

Quite true. Always make sure you have something in writing.

And Murphy's Law always applies in the workplace.

Old people love to feel victimized. You will be accused of trying to take advantage of the elderly, even when you're being the most helpful you can possibly be.

The first person in the office is required to make the coffee. Period.

Not quite. I was sharing these two tips with my eldest daughter who came home after a bad day from her part-time job.

If this is true what advice do you have for shy people in the workforce? [Other than "get over it"]

unlike School, there are no do-overs, extensions of deadlines and it doesn't matter who started it, but who finishes it.

Read your job Description. if you are in a Union, then it's a detailed description of your responsiblities. if you are not in a Union... then it's either the best fiction you'll ever read, or it's the bare minimum of what you have to do to keep your paycheck.

The Squeeky Wheel gets the oil... it also gets replaced.

Become irreplacable, and while you won't be fired, you also won't be promoted.

no where else will you see people happy to get 1 percent of anything... especially raises.

Your boss may only look like an Idiot, but be glad that he sits on a nice comfy chair... after all, it's his/her ass you have to kiss.

Youir boss may act like an idiot, but for some, it's exactly that... an ACT!

Big TIP: Don't be the person who finds and points of problems, be the person who finds and implements solutions. ;)

Being shy isn't about not being able to get a date. Being shy is about finding it difficult to connect with people and feeling uncomfortable having a conversation.

No, what you must do is be cunningly sarcastic-you're not saying anything out of line. You're just saying it in a tone that would suggest hatred of the deepest levels. I do it all the time.

Be careful whom you email, and with what. For that matter, be careful what information you let out period. People have a horrible tendency to gossip.

Never spam a listserv if you can avoid it.

Maybe, but too bad it's the truth and that culture is already present.

If you work in a shop, the customer is always, ALWAYS, wrong.

Maybe, but never under any circumstances suggest this, because the customer will ring up the head office and lodge a complaint against you or attempt to physically assault you. I learnt the hard way in both instances.
