Best Beer(s)?

Ok, let me slowly type this up, so there are very little typos.

I am drunk, but yes, I have learned how to type while drunk. It may take seeven times longer, but atleast you can make it out.

Ok.

So I am stuck here with coors light. I'd rather have Giunness, no, I'd fucking love to have Guinness, but I have coors. :(

Um, yes, my favourite beers: Guinness, Yuengling Lager, Heinekin.

What are you favourite beers?

There will be no poll.

Typing this up took me 20 minutes. :(

Pilsner Urquell(if it's spelled like that), kozel(i don't remember the exact name), heineken, beck's.Heineken and Beck's aren't beers really, just funny tasting water. The best beers are those brewed by the small private breweries from Alsace to Bohemia, including especially all of southern Germany. All the "beers" from bigger companies are rather undrinkable (above all the dirt from Anheuser-Busch).

now now, you can say it's a bad version of beer, but to say it isn't beer at all is petty.

I'll concur with Guiness and add Harp, Bass and Castlemain (from Australia) from the big breweries. Perhaps McEwans.

I enjoy draft Stella, but agree that bottled/canned just isn't up to it.

On the smaller scale, I both like the explosion of microbrews and dred it. You come across nice little ditties like Winter Solstice Ale and Pumkin Ale...but then have to deal with things like Mad Dog and Category 5 (they take the whole nautical theme a bit too far)

Finally, I'd like to put a plug in for: Fraoch Heather Ale. Simply an excellent beer.

Shiner is good, but Iron City beats it. It has more kick (alcahol content of around 4.5%), and better overall flavor. It's not full of a bunch of fruity flavors and whatnot. It's beer, plain and simple.

My drink of choice on the town is either Theakston's Best Bitter or Tetley's, but purely for the sake of price. If I've got the choice I'll go for Miller (I was raised on it), Budvar (actually nice), or a nice local Ale. Abbeydale's "Moonshine" and Ridley's (R.I.P.) "Old Bob" spring to mind.

I haven't really had much variety in beers. Being American and a college student, that really sucks down the pool of stuff decent I've probably had. Because Natty Light, Keystone Light, and Bud Light are the norms.

Anyway,
Domestic - Yuengling, does any other mid-to-heavy produced lager compare?
Import - Amstel, Stella Artois

My favorite beer in the world is Orval, from belgium.

For everyday drinking, I like Anchor Steam best.

I tend to go for ales, draught if I can get it, but bottle conditioned is still good.

Anything from the Durham Brewery (http://www.durham-brewery.co.uk/html-files/index.html) is good in a bottle or on tap, Jennings Sneck Lifter is very nice draught - I had a very happy new year on that. A recent find is Little Valley Brewerys 'Tod's Blonde'. Bottle conditioned, it is brewed by a Belgian guy in West Yorkshire. If you like continental lagers (or bier blondes, that sort of thing) try this.

My all time favourite ale is from the Isle of Skye Brewing Company (http://www.skyebrewery.co.uk/skye.htm) I prefer the Black Cuillin, but the Red is just as good.

I'm fond of Czeck(sp?) pilsner but just the other day I bought a bottle of Brooklyn Lager, just cause I never tried it and I was very glad I did. But if it boils down to one single favourite, I'd have to say Newcastle Brown Ale. If I could choose three, it would be the above, Gambrinus and Cobra(purely for nostalgic reasons.)

There are 16 million inhabitants in The Netherlands actually, if that's what you mean.

As for myself, I think almost all the Dutch beers, and especially Heineken, are very bad. Except maybe Gulpener but that's hardly The Netherlands anyway. And they're even worse compared to the Belgian beers.

I quite enjoy Jupiler and Kriek and also Duvel.
Not very patriotic, but we Dutch just can't seem to brew good beer.

Because Bavaria is a Dutch brand (and not southern German) ;)
And having that many breweries in a small country like the Netherlands is still quite remarkable.

theakston XB is really good, as is Bishop's Finger. Deuchar's IPA is great. and Adnam's Broadside and Well's Bombardier too. and there's Fraoch Heather Ale which is supposedly derived from a chemical analysis of some residue left beind on a pot sherd of a fermented drink made with heather flowers c.2000BC in Scotland, it's definitely worth a try, very drinkable.

Arrogant Bastard Ale is a great beer.

You can buy it at your supermarket for four fifty, and World Market for three eighty. You get one bottle, but it's a pint + six ounces. No lame twist-tops, just pure delicious microbrew goodness.

If you want a more cost efficient beer, go with Sam Adams. Boston Lager is great, but other Sam Adams labels are also superb.

Also, for the Ohioans around, look for Great Lakes Brewery, Burning River Pale Ale is amazing, but most everything else from GLB is amazing.

(This is recommendations of American Domestic Beers, getting into European beers is a whole 'nuther world of amazingness that would take me way too long to deal with properly.)

So those buildings are still standing? Or have they been demolished? All that space...going to waste...

I wonder why they moved...

Yeah, between the West Road and St James' Park, and opposite what was probably the coach station at that time (I cant remember when they demolished that). The buildings are still standing, unused. Apparently they wanted to cut costs, and centralise. As usual. :( There was talk of selling the land off, and I think there is a sign advertising the site for sale, but thats been there for years. Its dead now, and a bit of an eyesore.

And I can believe its an eye sore alright. What a shame.

Huh? What happened to him? I only made the remark cuz he's always been a fat drunk -- or at least, that's what he became in his later playing years. He was still a great footballer when he was in his prime.

(Have to forgive any ignorance on my part. I'm in the US, and it's not like we get news about British footballers very often, unless it's that Beckham prat.)

Yeah...no fears...thing is that he has Tourettes. And given his pretty horrible childhood upbringing to the total mismanagement of his football career has turned his life into a total train wreck.

He could have been one of the greatest players in the world...had his mental illness been dealt with properly.

Newcastle Brown is good, but being an import, it's a little expensive for me to drink regularly.

It's not so good tinned as it is out of a tap. Then it's just pure lager genius. Out of a tin, it's alright, but nothing especially special.

I've never had it out of a tin - i've had it out of bottles, and on tap. I still got that aftertaste, unfortunately. I mean, i'll drink it, but there's a lot of other things i'd drink in preference.

Sam Adams

The taste of that reminded me of ashtrays. :( But then, I only tried a single bottle of it and it might be a beer that takes a while to get into. But that sollitary bottle was quite expensive, so i'll pass.

Yeah. Had his handlers actually gave a shit about the bloke and not his talent he could have easily been at the level of Best, Pele, Eusabio etc....

I suspect that the managers (Venebles at Spurs) knew he had a problem...but were not willing to deal with it. Also given that Gazza saw his best mate get killed in a car accident when he was a child (amongst other tragedies) he was damaged goods.

But that talent...damn. What a waste.

Killkenny is a brand beer...no heritage. It was made to cater to the new fashion of Irish theme pubs in the 1990's.

Like these new Ciders that are appearing on the market...they are brands.

I'm not saying that Killkenny is a bad beer btw! Or that the new Ciders are .... but what pisses me off is the advertising makes it seem like they are somehow traditional.

Yikes, I never knew all that. I just saw him play when he was younger, then heard about his drinking and watched him get fat. Really is sad. He really was an exciting player to watch.

Totally....his booze thing stemmed from the tradition in English clubs to drink...lots. Later it became a crutch to deal with his other illness.

Exciting ...totally.

As for Venebles....I have 0 time for that bloke...what with being a Leeds supporter. ;)

I don't even think Venebles was that good with football. Overrated, in my opinion.

I'd actually like to see him managing the English national team. He'd be awesome. My second choice for y'all would be Curbs. He'd also be good.

Leeds, though? Yeah, say hello to first division. A shame really. So much potential a few years ago (when they had the likes of Viduka). The squad's been gutted, though.

If Peirce gets the job I would be happy. I hope though that the FA gets its house in order first. Not that that will happen given the corruption in UEFA let alone FIFA.

However I hope that he gets a good solid career in the league. Here...and with a winning club. All due respect...Man City (like Leeds...and this hurts) are in the shadow of Old Trafford. Can you see him managing Man United? Or Liverpool? That is the problem with Peirce. He needs big club experience. Unless he turns Man City into a contender. The money is not there though. Man City might get into Europe...but win anything? Unlikely.

I speak from my own club's experience. We (well that scumbag Risdale did) put the club in hock and won bugger all. And our team was OUTSTANDING on the pitch. That was one of the problems...it was off the pitch bollocks that screwed us...and a bad manager (with regards to O'Learys book). The point is though that in the space of what...5 years we went from average to amazing to relegation. All due to money. We could not sustain the wage bill because we missed out on a Champion League spot...and that killed us. Bad financial management.

And we are headed to the 1st...(old 3rd division...un fucking believable).

But I will still support the club. Yeah crazy. Football....what can I say?

Guinness is great to drink by itself, but only from tap. The bottled stuff is just nasty piss.
To drink with a meal, Tsingtao is a nice, light beer with a slightly sweet aftertaste. I have yet to see it on tap.
If in England (especially around Oxfordshire), try Old Speckled Hen (on tap). Yet to be seen by me in the US.

Now this is a topic with which I have considerable experience.

On the more blonde, mainstream end of the spectrum, Victory Brewing Company's Prima Pils is by far the best German Pilsener style beer I've ever had, bar none. For all of you in the US drinking imported beer, go find this one. It is the very definition of a German Pilsener, and even if German beers aren't your style, I can practically guarantee you'll like it anyway. Victory did a masterful job with this one.

At the other end of the beer spectrum, Samuel Smith's Russian Imperial Stout is probably my favorite beer of all time. It's like drinking a mixture of roasted malt, coffee and tar. It's pitch black, it's thick and it's filling. But it's smooth as hell. This is what Guinness SHOULD be. A meal in a bottle.

Buh? I've never heard any woman say they don't drink beer because of "calories and weight issues". It's not exactly like any other alcohol is especially low-caloric.

The ones who like beer drink it, the ones who don't like beer usually say it's because it tastes bitter.

I'm one of the latter, and while I would insist it really does taste bitter and not very appealing, I think the fact that females disproportionately go for sweet, cocktail-ish drinks while males disproportionately go for bitter stuff and hard liquor has nothing to do with genderdifferentiated tastebuds and everything to do with socialization. :(

Oh well. It's still bitter. :p

Not those words, but I have heard women (and men) tell me that they avoid beer because they'll gain weight from it. Ever heard of a "beer belly"? OK, think about how well ingrained that phrase is, and think about how much your typical modern woman worries about gaining weight.

Take a look at Michelob Ultra, billed as a low-carb beer. It's marketed towards women. One ad I could find online essentially was a women's fitness montage.

Pilsener Urquell

The finest beer ever made.

By the way, the Pilsen brewery brews one batch every year using the same equipment, ingredients and methods that they did when it was first brewed in 1842. They do this for quality control purposes, to ensure that the beer's flavor remains unchanged. This old-fasioned beer is only served to the public at one bar in the world, the Na Park Nu Pub acrost the street from the brewery.

If I'm ever in Czech, I'm definitely stopping there for a beer.
