It has been noted in various zoos that just prior to an earthquake, many animals there behave strangely, or to put it more succinctly, they behave like there's a great big fire coming and they want out. It may have something to do with their superior hearing abilities that can detect frequencies on several levels higher than humans can.
Snakes are a bit of an unusual choice, but they were among the animals noted to behave oddly prior to earthquakes.
Much like how fish behaved very differently prior to the major tsunami some some two years ago, many animals just have a much better danger sense than humans.
