Car Alarms

Do they do anything other than annoy people in the middle of the night. There has been one going off outside for the last twenty minutes and most of us in the place are begining to wish that a theif would boost the bloody thing.Does anyone even check to see if a car is being stolen???
A friend of mine who was kinda 'into' cars in his youth says they don't deter a theif as people just ignore them anyway. And any good theif can disconnect them anyway in seconds.

*grabs sledge and heads out to stop the noise*

So what bloody use is a car alarm anyway?

To alert people in the local area that a car has been broken into.
You've noticed it.It's doing it's job.

Not really. I had a bird take a crap on my neighbour's Audi, and the damn thing's alarm went off for a half-hour.

Nah, I noticed the sound, didn't bother to get off my arse and actually see if it was being boosted.(How civic minded of me.)

It helps amuse me. I've got a particularly nasty one hooked up to my minivan that I designed myself to be foolproof, in that no thief can turn it off. It's a combination of the most irritating sounds a car alarm makes, and the alarm throws a string of beeps at you if you smack the car to try to get it to shut up. It's worked, too, as there was one point about a year ago when it would have been stolen had it not been for my car alarm. Instead, all they did was smash out the back window.

It would be much better if a car alarm was more like this....:

*Window smashes*
Car: Oh no you didn't! You did not just invade my personal space!"
Thief: "Holy crap!!"
Car: "You better be getting out of here right now before I make road jam of you."

*Thief runs away screaming*

One of the most irritating car experiences I ever had was with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, that SOB had some sort of crossed wiring, so that whenever I unlocked the door with the key on the drivers side, the alarm would go off. The cheap solution was to just unlock the car from the passengers side, and that's what I did. But every so often I'd screw up and try to unlock the drivers side out of habit. So, yeah, flippin' sweet.

Remember when those keychains that let you activate the car alarm from afar first came out?

I used to to hide in the house (or somewhere nearby) when the car was parked in the street, and I would wait for an unsuspecting victim to walk past. They would be pretty startled to have a car beeping at them for no reason.

Well the alarm has stopped. But I think thats probably because the car attached to it was knicked.:D

My dad loved doing that when he got his first a few years ago.

There's one car in the parking lot of my apartment complex, that has an alarm so sensitive, that if you walk by it, it'll go off (No contact has to be made with the vehicle either). I want to smash it with a hammer, so at least the alarm has a reason to go off.

Whenever I hear a car alarm, I get the urge to go out and help whoever is trying to steal the thing, just so he can drive off with it as soon as possible and the noise will finally stop.
One of these days I won't be able to resist that urge any longer.

I think next time I hear a car alarm going off, and it's at someone's house, I should go up to their door, knock on it, and run away, leaving a note that reads, in crude script:

So that asshats can turn it on, and never check it when it goes off, so as to bug the flying fuck out of their nieghbors. I recently watched a young lady in one of the apartments a couple of doors down park her car, lock it up and walk in. Scantly five seconds later the damn thing goes off (for no aparent reason). Does she have the decency to come turn it off. Nope. She is most definantly within hearing range still, as is roughly half of all gods creations. But she just lets it beep. For five fucking minutes. And this is just one experince of many involving asshats with car alarms (or cars for that matter).[/rant]

so can anyone on this forum actually admit to going out and checking on a car alarm that wasn't their own?

everyone, within hearing range suffering every time an alarm goes off by accident and isn't dealt with promptly by the owner, has a genuine noise-complaint greivance with the (irresponsible) owner of the vehicle

why does an owner of a vehicle get to override the personal liberties of every last one of their neighbours, especially when they so frequently fail to respond to said alarm?

I agree, some car alarms are far too enthusiastic about their job. I had a car "stolen" last year and because of my situation (jobless single parent) I was unable to take my son to see his mother or see my parents for a year. I had to break into the savings I had been putting to one side for my son's college fund since he was born to buy a new one.

I said "stolen" because they didnt manage to steal it but what they did was:

Break Drivers side door lock
break the steering lock (buckling the steering column in the process)
break the ignition (failed attempt but much damage done)
hotwire (failed attempt due to imobolizer but serious damage to wiring)
steering column cowling destroyed and taken (to remove fingerprint evidence)

the car had no alarm and when the thief was unable to steal the car he proceeded to vandalise it which included not only knifing all 4 tyres but actually cutting sections out of the tyre wall on one tyre.

The car was only a £200 (17 year old VW Polo 1.0 C) runner and worth less than the excess on my insurance so no claim was made. But the point is it was worth more than just money to me and had I had an alarm I would have heard it go off (the car wasnt directly outside my house that time because someone had nicked my parking space).

This time the car I have has an alarm and an imobiliser. The attempt on my car is unique in some ways though, thieves won't normally spend time vandalising a car if they cant steal it.. thats ammateur work. Yet taking the steering column cowling, which has fingerprints on the underside where it was torn off, means whoever did it knows what they were doing. The hotwiring was accurate too, they just didnt know a car that old had had an imobiliser fitted. Thus it seems that the attempt was likely a personal attack.

Yes car alarms - in general good. I understand people ignore them because they go off for so long though.. I did in fact call the police myself the other day. I'm used to hearing them in my street. thats nothing unusual, large vans set them off but hearing the doppler effect on a car alarm as the car speeds past my house was a different story :). I did report that incident though I have no idea if anything came of it.

Oh I also think that car security systems should be able to "Taser" the thief throught the seat, door handles and steering wheel too. :). AND take a photo of the guy as its doing it (moblie phone tech could easily have the pic sent to somewhere secure quickly too).
