Police are trying to determine how about 70 pieces of luggage landed Tuesday inside a trash bin in north Harris County.
The small mountain of bags was discovered about 10 a.m. outside a pet shop along Bammel Westfield near the North Freeway, Harris County Sheriff's deputies said.
Some of the luggage had been rifled through. The baggage had destination tags from several overseas locations, including London and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, indicating they probably came from international flights arriving at Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The airport is about a mile to the southeast of the spot where they were discovered, authorities said.
Because some of the bags originated in the Middle East, FBI agents also were brought in to examine the items.
An FBI spokesman said the bags did not pose a danger to the public.
Although the luggage found in the trash bin came from several air carriers, Continental Airlines officials took custody and transferred them to their baggage service center.
"We're trying to reach whoever we need to let them know the bags are there," said Mary Clark, a Continental spokeswoman.
Officials from other carriers identified on the luggage also are being notified, Clark said.
Because the luggage probably came from Bush airport, Houston police officers are leading the investigation. Clark said Continental was cooperating with authorities.
"Right now, we're just trying to identify the customers and notify them (and) try to get their bags back to them," Clark said.
Well, now you know where all of the luggage you lose on plane flights ends up...
