I has an unusual question for Christians/Catholics

Colodia

Do you guys do anything important at a church at like 6:00 pm? Cuz, I wanna call my semi-girlfriend to ask her out but she's really religious so I don't know if she's busy with her holy duties. >_> I don't know what they do on Christmas days since I'm atheist and never really asked my friends about it....

Anyone?

Why did you say "Christians/Catholics" ?

Why not just "Christians" as a matter of interest?

I assume it's because he (Another assumption) doesn't actually know which she is.

I haven't heard of anything specific, although there could be family traditions, or specific to their church traditions.

Call her home, at worst, there's no real harm done. If she's not at home, leave a message that doesn't say too much :)

This close to christmas, if she's not at home, dont ring a cellphone.

Oh dear.

Christianity branches into two main sects, Protestantism, and Catholicism.

Catholicism = Christianity. Protestantism = Christianity.

(and its 9:30, what kind of messed up backwards place do you live in?)

There's nothing wrong with Atlanta... Except the weather, crime, high cost of living, traffic, etc. etc. :D

Unless she has something on that shes into personally, calling her should be fine. I dont know of any faith-based traditions that happen at 6pm.

Also, let us know how you go.

Here at St. James Roman Catholic Church, we have Mass at 5pm on Saturday. I dunno about Christmas Mass. Usually for Christmas I go to the Midnight Mass.

What about Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Rite, the Ethiopian Church? There are many mainstream sects within Christianity. Now, there may be two main sects in western Christianity....

From my experience, Mass or any service can last roughly an hour... now a Christmas service may last longer, especially if they read the nativity story or have any special service or event.

I knew someone was going to call me on that... For the sake of brevity and simplicity I decided to only mention the two people are most familiar with already (Colodia seemed to think Christianity and Catholicism were different religions).

Even though, by many (or most) people, Catholicism is considered a Christian denomination, there are some people who don't, for various reasons, such as the reverence to an ordinary human (the pope) rather than, or as well as, God - in other words they seem to treat the pope as a God, as evidenced by the fact that what he says about a particular issue, it pretty much gets accepted/followed around the world, instead of Catholics being advised to consult the Bible, God Himself, and their own reasoning capabilities.

Catholicism is also a lot stricter than just about every other denomination - communion is held every day, sex before marriage is a complete no-no under whatever circumstances, being gay is seen as a shocking sin, etc. etc.

In C of E (Church of England, second-biggest Christian denomination - Catolicism is the biggest), there are various views about homosexuality (though a significant number believe it's a sin I think) and abortion, communion is only 1/2 times a week, and the Archbishop (highest C of E dude) is treated nowhere near as special as the pope, though it is a special event if he comes to visit a church (or if any bishop does).

P.S. Dunno about other countries, but in England, there's a Cathedral (Catholic 'Church') near me that has mass from 5:30pm - 6:30pm. I think evening mass at my own church starts at 6pm and as morning mass lasts about an hour and a half, evening mass probably lasts until 7:30pm

from what I've seen the Catholic church is a lot more tolerant about homosexuality than the Religious Right American Protestant sects. hell, the Catholic Church even affirms the compatibility of evolution and the Big Bang with their beliefs. can't say the same for many protestant sects.

it depends on her church. some hold bible studies and even mass at night.

My suggestion... ask her. if she is busy with church duties or what not, then she'll inform you. accept her answer and find out what nights she has open. It will make you seem more supportive of her beliefs and also a litmus test to see if she does want to go out with you.

Well I dunno about other denominations, but when I undertook confirmation before joining C of E, my priest basically said it made sense not to 100% believe the Genesis account of creation and that what happened is probably a mixture of some biblical stuff and some scientific stuff

They look similar from a distance. It's not like most people can tell the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite.

no, christianity branches into THREE main sects, eastern orthodoxy, roman catholicism, and protestantism. the churches of the east are no more similar to rome than protestantism is, and they're the 2nd largest body of believers in christianity, there are far more of them than there are of protestants. :headbang:  :headbang:  :headbang:

except that there are massive theological and social differences between catholics and protestants, whereas sunnis and shiites have identical theology and disagree over a question of historical legitimacy and politics, not religion.

the eastern orthodox are even less strict. I told a priest I was gay, his response was "...so what? you should hear what I hear in confession - everybody sins, it's got nothing to do with how you come to god" - though they still say it's wrong, since it sort of throws a wrench in their traditional theology. (some) protestants are the main ones that are hate-mongering and kicking people out of churches though.

Communion may be offered everyday, but attending mass is only encouraged once a week, on Sunday. The Pope is not a god and nobody treats him as such. He is merely given authority over doctrine, but only when speaking Ex Cathedra. Not everything the Pope says is ex cathedra, in fact it's not used often at all. A Pope does not use this willy nilly, making something a part of dogma is a long and difficult process full of research, prayer and deep reflection.

Yes, sex before marriage is frowned upon... but its the same in many other religions. I seriously doubt any modern and mainstream religion advocates sex before matrimony.

And homosexuality is labeled as a sin in the bible, therefore it is a sin.

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." Leviticus 18:22

Nah, there aren't. They just make it seem big, just like Sunnis and Shiites.
