LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger broke his leg on Saturday while skiing with his family in Sun Valley, Idaho, the governor's office said.

The 59-year-old former movie star broke the femur bone in his right leg and was taken to a local hospital for X-rays and later discharged, Adam Mendelsohn, the governor's deputy chief of staff for communications, said in a statement.

"When the governor returns to Los Angeles from his scheduled Christmas trip, he will have surgery to repair his femur. No one else was involved in the skiing accident," Mendelsohn's statement said.

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said she did not know how the governor hurt his leg. She said he was skiing at the time with family members who were not identified.

Schwarzenegger is in Idaho with his wife, Maria Shriver, and their four children, Soderlund said.

"The governor's doing great, and he's looking forward to spending the Christmas holiday with his family," Soderlund said by telephone on Saturday night.

Soderlund said Schwarzenegger was not in a cast but was resting at his Sun Valley home. She said she did not know when the governor would undergo surgery.

The femur is the longest bone in the human body.

Schwarzenegger, a native of Austria, is an "experienced skier," Soderlund said.

This was the governor's third medical incident in just over a year.

In January, he got 15 stitches to close a cut lip after colliding with a car while riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Los Angeles.

Last December, Schwarzenegger was examined at the University of California-Davis Medical Center for stomach flu and a rapid heartbeat. He was back at work the next day. Schwarzenegger underwent heart surgery in 1997.

I'm curious as to how this will affect the governing in California, if it will at all. Thoughts, Californians?

Meh. Just thought it'd be worth a Christmas giggle if nothing else, considering the sheer dirth of decent threads on NSG today.

He should have been a man and just crawled back to the Californian border and resumed his duties.

*sighs*

Well, here's to hoping the US Constitution can get changed so that the US can get rightly ruled by a film star. That'd be good.

I don't think this will have much of an effect.

But jeeze, this guy should be a little more careful....

But... he was in Idaho. Have we expelled them from the Union?

Oh. Whoops, I assumed he was back in Austria for a bit.

And... urmm... you probably should, just for a day or two, to punish them a bit.

It's the 15 stitches in his lip for hitting a car on a motorbike that surprises me.

He's still freakin impressive.

Aren't broken femur's normally lethal? And the most painful bone (Except occasionally the clavicle) to break?

No, I don't need a cast, just a few days rest and a lot of surgery.

I wonder, will they even give him painkillers for it? Or put him to sleep during the operation?

Are you talking about the leg, or the Governator, or what?

Nope. No fatal-bits in there. Permenant disability, maybe, but definitely not fatal. It's a leg bone. :p

Some, including myself, have argued that the 14th amendment nullifies the requirement that a president must be a natural born citizen.

Actually, he's got a point. If it's an open fracture, or multifragmentary, the risk to the femoral artery is increased and the chances of bleeding to death are quite large. He might also suffer some immunodeficiency, as a large proportion of the bone marrow is in the femur.

EDIT: Not that it's "normally fatal" - Ahnuld's not a horse, after all :p

We don't need to change the Constitution for that. Ronald Reagan was a former film star.

Did he blow up some robots and give birth despite being a man?

If so, fair enough. Otherwise - only Arnie counts.

Oh brother, what a good camera would have been worth. Especially if he was screaming in a high pitch afterwards.

"Arrrrhhhhh! Myyyyy leeeeggggg!" *cries*

It would also be amusing if he maintained a cyborg monotone.

"I appear to be damaged. I now require a cutting tool"

Ms Clean Freak, thank you.

How about inflated housing costs, unreasonable state taxes, energy problems, overpopulation, too many stupid laws, and don't get me started on the California DMV and CalTrans.

Why do you think I left?

How about inflated housing costs

Inflated compared to... what?

You get what you pay for, you know.

, unreasonable state taxes

Taxes. I hear they're a problem in pretty much every state.

, energy problems,

Nah.

overpopulation,

So you feel that there are too many people and they shouldn't be alive? Or that they should just go elsewhere?

too many stupid laws,

Every state has it's stupid laws. Again I don't see how you think CA has more of them or that it's a worse problem.

Why do you think I left?

If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen!

Inflated compared to... what?

You get what you pay for, you know.

I sold my 1150 Sq. Ft. house in Moreno Valley for 309,000, I bought a better place in Colorado Springs for 117,000

Taxes. I hear they're a problem in pretty much every state.

Some states don't have state income tax. As a retiree in Colorado, I'll be able to live on my pension, because state taxes are reasonable. In California, I would be living in a box under a bridge.

Energy problems

Nah.

I used less electricity this last summer than I did the previous summer and paid 100 a month more - my highest month was 350.

So you feel that there are too many people and they shouldn't be alive? Or that they should just go elsewhere?

I feel that there are too many people in California. When it takes an hour to drive 7 miles to work in the morning, that's too many people and too many cars.

Every state has it's stupid laws. Again I don't see how you think CA has more of them or that it's a worse problem.

We'll see, so far I can handle Colorado laws better than I could California laws.

If you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen!

I did.

Sorry about that 'normally fatal' slip.

What I meant was it is likely to sever the femural artery (As someone else helped me after I left) if it's an open fracture, and causes immunodefiency problems (By greatly decreasing the amount of white blood cells you produce).

As such, it can be a cause of death, even if far later.

Lol, I hope he screamed like a girl. (Doubt it though, My only break (Clavicle) was painless for a few hours)
