I've spoken to alot of my friends and they either havent heard of Bob Dylan or think he sucks. I absolutely love Dylan and his music, i no every1 will have different opinions and i'm not forcing people to like him, i'm just saying people should at least know who he is and how important he is. I'd like to know other people's opinion on him, whether they like him or not:p

Besides being an incredible performer, Bob is a prolific writer and has no doubt been responsible for at least some of the music you like. He's been solo, in Joan Baez, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Al Kooper, The Band, Rolling Thunder Revue, Traveling Wilburys, The Grateful Dead, & Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Songs like Highway 61, Hard Rain's gonna fall, Like a rolling stone, All Along the Watchtower (which he gave to Jimi Hendrix), and literally hundreds of others are a major influence on the musical landscape.
I put him up there with Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Elvis,The Beatles and many other of the early rock acts... only he's like the Rolling Stones and is still at it!
Legend? Yeah!!

Well, if your friends haven't heard of Bob Dylan, they're in dire need of being laughed at. And of having fingers pointed at them while being laughed at, as well.

Your friends need to listen to his early electric stuff. He may sounded a bit dated at first, but keep listening and they will hear the voice of rock, pop, folk genius.

If purely on a musical level, is songs are revolutionary but not to everyones tastes.
However he influenced shit loads of musicians, including the Beatles and the bands in their era.
I am not particularly a fan of Dylan's works,(not that I have a dislike either) but you regularly see him from TV show references, to being sited as a "musical inspiration", to mentions in movies (Dangerous Minds is an excellent example), to various other mentions.....Thus, Bob Dylan has become a part life for millions, and in my mind has definitely reached "legend status".. I think the ultimate testament to this is that I, as a non-fan, acknowledge this.....

He does meet the standard for legend IMO. He was for a time the single biggest influence on popular music. He was the voice and conscious of a generation of Americans and young adults the world over.

I don't like Dylan's music at all, but i like psychobilly and punk so it's a bit diffrent from "my" taste.
I've only heard a handful of his songs, so I really can't say. He doesn't particularly intrigue me but he doesn't repulse me, either.

I only know two of his albums (The Times They are Changing, Nashville Skyline), but I would consider him a legend for his tremendous influence on his generation.

I recommend taking a wet fish and slapping your friends in the face with it while singing knocking on heavens door. Dylan is a legend for his influence even if you don't like his music, I don't like all of it but he has more than enough to satisfy me for an hour or two.
Edit 1:Out of curiousity do your friends have the same view of Led Zeppelin? If so use a very very large fish and don't stop until they're dead or realise the error of their ways.
Edit 2:Just noticed where you're from, I'm from Scotland and have to say the amount of people in the UK who know about good music and not prepackaged crud is very depressing.

Bob Dylan sucks. I hate this man A LOT.
Bob Dylan isn't even is real name. He got "Dylan" from some piece of shit poet from the 1910s who died of alchohol poisoning at the age of 20 something. What the hell kind of inspiration is some drunkard poet? Answer me that.
He can't find a fucking genre to stick to. He switches from folk, to country, to rock, etc. and then switches again. Call it versitile. Call it talented. I don't care, I think it's pretty lame that he can't find one style of music he permanently sticks with.
His voice; you know it sucks. He may be able to hit the notes, but he sounds awful. Listen to, "Honey just allow me one more chance" and I think you'l see what I'm talking about.
"BUT HE WRITES HIS OWN MUSIC!!!!!!!11111111ONE" So? Lots of other musicians do. Doesn't make him a legend by any stretch of the imagination.
He can play the harmonica though. That's hardcore.

Dylan was the ultimate songwriter. He had a talent with word and rhythm that defied description. Oddly enough, most of the best performances of his best work are done by other people. His songs call to people who take them and make them their own.

Yeah, his name was Robert Zimmerman, so what?
If the poet you're referring to is, by any chance, Dylan Thomas, the highly influential Welsh poet who died in 1953, then, well, he's quite an inspiration indeed. Got any real reason why he's not?

So... he's required to stick to one genre for the entirity of his career? I'd call that unimaginative, myself. Limited, even. Someone who can successfully traverse genres? Hardly lame.
His voice; you know it sucks. He may be able to hit the notes, but he sounds awful. Listen to, "Honey just allow me one more chance" and I think you'l see what I'm talking about.
Well, that's opinion, suit yourself.

Nooo, he's legendary for the sheer number of artists he's influenced over the years, including the Beatles, Lou Reed, Springsteen, Bowie, Floyd, etc.

I agree he does have some groundbreaking work ... which usually sounds better when other people perform it.
He had a good brain on him but I cant stand to listen to HIM sing any of his music for too long ...

If Zarakon is thinking of the 'Weather Underground' (or the 'Weathermen'), he's got it the wrong way 'round.
He kicks ass. I'm named after him, so he must be cool. He also wrote My Back Pages.
I'm not a huge fan. I don't dislike Dylan by any means, just not at the top of my list of things to listen to. However, he's legend, and rightfully so. He may be "good". Or not, that is a matter of taste, however, he was without a doubt "great".

I don't think any act other than The Beatles and Elvis Presley have been as influnetial as Bob Dylan has been. He formed new genres of music, was probably the greatest lyricist that ever existed and has created several of rock and folks greatest albums. There is abosolutely no question that Bob Dyaln is one of music's greatest artists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weatherman_%28organization%29
The name Weatherman was derived from the Bob Dylan song “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, which featured the lyrics “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”
What's your favorite Jazz style and artist?
Well....I love Bebop, and Thelonious Monk is my favorite player...but that's probably becuase I'm a piano player myself.
Mile Davis's free jazz and fusion work is pretty incredible, and I've always been a fan of Herbie Hancock as well (The young one, not the old one.)

I've heard a little of their stuff, but not much; I'm not really into modern Jazz or Afro-Cuban myself. Jason Marsalis is in that one, right?
I forgot to mention Gil Evans and Mingus, too.

Mozart is overrated? I'll give you that he's been overhyped, but the man was a friggin' genius. Which is not to say that there aren't other musical geniuses out there, but overrated? I think not. Now, Kurt Cobain is only famous for screwing what's her name, the sloppy blonde, and then blowing his brains out. That's overrated. (But I suspect there's a number of years in age between us, so we'll agree to disagree, shall we?)

A drunk poet? Surely some mistake. Whatever next, a model with an eating disorder?
As for Mr Zimmerman, it's hard to deny his status as the inventor of folk rock and one of the most influential artists ever. I wouldn't call him a legend, because I think legends have to be dead.

Dylan is a great lyricist, but judging from the one time I saw him live, a truly shitty performer. I've heard people cover his songs, and they're great. He, however, sang so badly it sounded like a parody of himself.
