Note: I mean no offense with the Kiwi statement. I'm presuming it's used much like Aussie, or Brit, or Yank. If I'm being an idiot, please forgive me.

Christmas spirit hasn't come up eversince I set foot here. It makes me sad rather than all warm and fuzzy to see people out bloody decorations out in 35° heat.

It's just so out of place.

I think I've officially become an adult, or at least slightly less of a child. Christmas this year holds no surprises, little excitement and a slight need to get away from my family and back to university.

On the other hand, I'm getting this for christmas:

It's a cambridge audio azur 540a v2 audio amplifier, which I picked up for £150 instead of £250. 60W per channel, with two channels and a subwoofer jack, so it's loud. It's also really high quality sound, so even at max output the clarity's excellent. I'm not much of an audiophile, but I had a cambridge before this and it was the best amp of anybody I know, except DJs.

...of course, not that wattage measures loudness (as much as you can describe an amp alone as being loud) in any real sense...

I won't even mention my 2x700w@8Ohm Yamaha amp here.

About twice as loud as a 2 x 6W amp, if my maths is right (all other things being equal).

Note: I'm not trying to be pernickety, just someone fascinated by the mechanics of sound reproduction.

Yeah, I was just reading up on it. I suppose the wattage of amplifiers is analogous to the pixel rating of digital cameras - it's just a nice number that makes people feel better about buying stuff. I have, as it were, been had.

Still a damn nice amp for the price I feel, considering I'm getting in on the bottom end of the market.
Bodies Without Organs
24-12-2006, 23:29
I have, as it were, been had.

Nah, not really, you'll be less likely to clip it and so less likely to damage your speakers, thus allowing you to get more volume out of them than if you had a lower rated amp. The sensitivity rating of your speakers is probably the best rule-of-thumb measure of how loud a system is, but anyhoo...

Still a damn nice amp for the price I feel, considering I'm getting in on the bottom end of the market.

Certainly. Cambridge Audio ain't nothing to be sniffed at.

Home hi-fi is something I know little about. I come at these things from a live sound perspective.

One of the problems with the audiophile market is that there is just so much smoke and mirrors stuff. For example, how do you fancy nearly £200 for a silver power cable (http://signalcable.com/silverresolutionpower.html)* or £300 for a wooden knob (http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=NOB_C37_C)?

The sad thing is that people buy this shit.
