Why are we on NSG?

Neu Leonstein
23-12-2006, 13:13
Two questions I wondered about recently, and which I'm trying to get answered.

The first is: How many people are actually on NSG? How many Generalites are there?
For that I've got the poll. Please answer truthfully and don't use your puppets.

The second is: Why do you come to NSG? What does it give you?

I was wondering because I feel like I have a part of my personality that comes out on NSG but doesn't when I'm with real-life friends. I'm much more argumentative here, I'll jump out and have massive debates with people and so on.

In real life I'm much more agreeable. I suppose politics and economics rarely comes up as a topic with my mates, so that may play a role. But I seem much more confident simply typing stuff into a grey box than I am in real life when people say stuff I disagree with. Not that I agree with everything and just take it, but I'll often leave political arguments before they really start. It's almost as though this rabid libertarian unrelenting mind is socially unacceptable, so I keep it caged up.

So what does NSG give you that the real world doesn't?

What does NSG give me that the real world doesn't?

It's a place where I can really let off steam, as I have literally no way of doing so in the real world (save for riding my bike, though it's been too cold lately). I like to think of it as a release, with the occasional great thread that offers a nice pick-me-up.

Aside from that? Not much, really. I'm no less confident in reality than I am here... Though I know the right things to say, and when (I'm not going to start shit with people for next to no good reason). The person you see in this post is the person you'll see in reality.

I'm here all the time, but you wouldn't know it from my post count since I lurk somewhat, or at least I used to. I use NSG to debate things and be subsequently ignored or laughed at, and also just because you're all so awesome. :) It's where I can get social interaction outside of school, where the level of discourse is not up to the standards here anyway. :p

I argue politics and philosophy at every opportunity in the real world, so it isn't that.

Edit: And this rabid unrelenting left-wing anarchist mind is also socially unacceptable, but it doesn't care. :)

Quoted for truth, although I'd like to add in a part about being able to joke around with people, that's always fun too... and usually happens in smaller threads. Reading 100 pages to catch up is never fun :(

It is, but I do it much more in the real world than I do on NS.

I don't know why that is... perhaps it's because I avoid the spam threads (except when I realize dozens of pages in that I'm paying for all the drinks.)

I am here constantly, now.

I had a... break, with my old nation.

I'm here for the socialising, the funnies that I don't seem to be getting in real life anymore:(

On the internet people seem to like me better than in person, especially people I actually know in person. I'm more confident, have time to think and reply and there is just a range of stuff I can do here and on computers that I'd be stuck without. Also, sometimes for support I come here.

Why do I NSG? (yes, NSG is also a verb :D) Because I am the NSA point agent tasked with monitoring un-American activities on this site.

But really, NSG is great. It has the elements of the good, the evil, the stupid, and the incompetent, all readily available for you at one spot. You can get into serious discourse about the most inane topic and get completely absurd about the most pressing matter of the day.

On top of that, I can recall at least eight distinctive essays I have written recently in which NSG was the prime muse for its thesis. I'm also blazing a different path then I had before, and it is intriguing to interact with people who don't lead hedonistic lifestyles.

Debating the shortcomings of Bush the Lesser. Until 9/11, I was rather ambivalent towards Bush, but since the decision to invade Iraq became a reality, I realized just how dangerous this man could be and ultimately has been. Not just dangerous to Americans but dangerous to the world.

He claimed to be a uniter, yet proved to be a divider. He tried to stake claims as a "compassionate conservative", and yet has proven to be an intolerant President, beholding only to his "base", and spending money like a drunken sailor.

I would like to have a dollar for everytime that I typed the name Bush here at NSG. I would have lots of money for sure.

Of course on the days that Bush wasn't a major focus of my derision, I have gone into the religious debates, upholding the firm belief that there is a God and I am not Him.

Often, one could find me debating the benefits of gun control and contesting any so called "benefits" for the death penalty.

Only lately have I been involved in debates with self labelled "feminists", who appear to have a latent hatred towards men or a serious desire to dominate them. Strange indeed.

And lastly, there is the goofy threads that generate a bit of good natured kibitzing. After all, life can be too serious at times and it certainly is good to kick back and relax.

Oh, and my New Years resolution is to retire from NSG, once my wife comes to Canada. She will be the focus of my day by day devotion and affection. Nothing personal against you wonderful people, but I look forward to that day. :)

Well, I occasionally use this for political discussion, but I don't get involved in debates as often as I used to. My patience has worn thin with the ridiculous arguments and ignorance that often surface. It has gotten to the point where nothing would surprise me anymore and I have difficulty in some cases telling whether those spouting said arguments are trolling or actually honestly expressing themselves. I find that these are less prevalent in real-life, but of course that's because I don't tend to associate much with bigots or those without a clue in my day to day life, or at the very least avoid discussing politics with them. (Most of my friends fall into the latter and either haven't a clue or give two shits about politics, i've gotten my fill of debating from uni and political activity instead.)

So...I don't really know why i'm here then. I've met some pretty cool people, but I wouldn't have stuck around if there wasn't something else to keep me here. Maybe it's simply lack of anything better to do.

I'm just here to keep myself occupied whilst I wait ("never wait" is a motto of mine that I've decided to let slide a little this once) for everything to be sorted out before I complete my move to Los Angeles. I don't have much work at the moment because of the move and I only need to read a few bits and pieces and make a couple of calls a day. My wife is in America atm, so I need something to keep my mind busyish.

I'm sure the same old topics come up over and over again anyway so a couple of weeks of NSG is all I really want.
