Postpartum insanity?

I work in the child abuse prevention field, and we see a lot of weird shit. My coworkers have stories about clients and themselves being pretty fucked up after they had their babies. (I have never been pregnant.) Has anybody here been or known somebody who had postpartum depression...or worse?

I had PPD with my first child, slept 12+ hours a day (basically when I wasn't nursing) hated life, didn't eat, didn't talk, didn't get out of my room.

I had to quit nursing because she wasn't growing (because I wasn't eating and the milk sucked) and started taking anti-depressants, within 5 weeks I was okay again. I didn't have the scary depression where I was going to hurt my kid, I just didn't care to do anything, I am pretty sure it was all chemicals, except that I didn't get to hold my baby for like 5 hours after I had her probably added to it....the feeling of detachment.

With my second kid I didn't have any problems, of course my OB talked to the nurses on the labor floor and I got to hold her immediately after I had her, then they took her away for a few hours, I really think it made a difference (but I could be insane).

There's Andrea Yates. Classic case of crash and burn post-partum mental illness.

She is referenced in this article. I find it interesting how she is portrayed in popular culture. Some people believe she was faking it...and maybe she was. Who knows? I did a report on her in school ages ago but I can't remember what I concluded.

I don't think you're insane. Apparently this happens to more than 13% of women in America. That's a lot of people.

I've never experienced postpartum anything, for some strange reason.

I think I will have something like that. I already have a lot of depressive symptoms...adding a baby to the mix can only make things worse. Can you remember the 10 signs?

Why is there no "Depression is just an excuse for laziness and acting spoiled" option on the poll? <.<

Because Tom Cruise is unavailable to vote on that option.

The woman had five kids rapid fire because her husband and she didn't believe in birth control and he was a horny fucker.

That'd make anyone crazy.

risks for depression

stress (like money, moving, etc)
family history of depression
family status changes (getting married, divorced, death in the family)
history of depression
drug/alcohol abuse (or recovering from)
pregnancy
illness
being female

I may have combined some........I had all of those though

I think you only really need one (or none if it's a chemical depression)

Dude, as someone who actually -had- depression until about four days ago (you should see my inside wrists), I can obviously joke about it. Right?

I haven't known anyone, although I did hear about a woman who hacked off both her baby's arms while suffering from it.

That's horrible:( , did the mother kill herself or did she get sentenced?

She called 911 as soon as she did it, I understand. I'm assuming she spent some time in a psyche prison.

Cripes! I guess that's what happens when nobody follows up with new moms to make sure they're doing okay. We need better and more thorough screening procedues.
