UN Volunteering

As stupid as this may or may not sound, I intend to volunteer myself to the real life UN as soon as I graduate from high school, which is about a year from now. I wonder if that is even possible though...

Anyone have any idea if it is even possible and where I should go?I went to their website but all they want are people who have expertise or money to help them out, not a dumb kid like me.

I'd truly like to do something. Any community service. Honest. Like I said, sounds stupid... Guess I'm stupid.

I'm not American, so I can't join the peace corps. Strange how hard it is to help people.

I don't really know what I could do in my home country either...so I thought the UN would be a good starting point.

I encourage you in your goals. But I think you have to be e diplomat appointed by your government. If that is the case you may want to get involved in the government or such.

What country are you from anyway? If you want to do stuff in the UN, Youth Assembly seems the best idea, but if you're graduating soon, you probably missed that already.

Honestly, you'd be wasting your time at that failed and corrupt organization known as the UN.

If you truly want to help and volunteer, you should check out those nursing homes or various charity organizations like the Salvation Army or whatnot. Homeless shelters take volunteers also. There's actually a lot of different places you could volunteer. A lot of non-profit organizations appreciate volunteers too or churches. Good Luck.

Well, I'm probably going to shock a lot of people and cause some people to change a lot of their initial impressions, but I am Saudi Arabian. I'm not American or Christian, so can't be Salvation Army or Peace Corps for me.

But, anyway, getting past that.

I know but I couldn't resist on taking a crack at the UN. :D

Heck, they deserve just as much criticism as any other government gets whether it be the USA, UK, France, Germany, or whoever else. Why should the UN be exempt from criticism?

Well, I have to admit I don't know too much about Saudi Arabia but don't they have certain charities or non-profit organizations, have you checked the Mosques? Surely they accept volunteers.

Worse case scenario, I suppose you could go to a business and volunteer your time. I'm sure they wouldn't mind having somebody to work for free. :D

Interesting, but who are they? Are they affiliated with UN or just it's own organization?

Why should the UN be exempt from criticism?I don't see you calling the other governments corrupt and ineffective all the time. Sure, it deserves criticism. It deserves to be understood too, which you apparently do not.

Can I do anything with them? I'm not a doctor or anything.

Neither, actually. Currently, I live in Cairo, Egypt. I lived in America, but that was way back in 98.

I strongly urge you to get involved with the United Nations. They are extremely crippled as of late, and new ideas and people are always appreciated I am sure. I would love to be an ambassador to the UN and perhaps the UN will reform one day.

Well, basically, what it says on their website is I should go to a local center and ask them if they need volunteers or I can contact one myself through the net and see if they respond.

Oh well.I need to sleep now. I'll try and work on it in the morning.

Feel free to post anything that could help me and thanks a million in advance.

There's Caritas Egypt (http://www.caritasegypt.com/english/index.htm).
And I stumbled across this while looking for it: UN Volunteers (http://www.unvolunteers.org/)
