My cat is dead...

No, it's not a joke title. My cat, Audrey (named for Audrey Horn of Twin Peaks fame) had to be put down this morning at 9 AM PST due to kidney failure. She was 19+ years old, but that doesn't make it any less heavy on my heart.

I would make a crack about curiosity killing the cat, but cats are the only pets I actually like.

I don't know who you are, all I know is that is a loss that no-one should have to go through.

I feel for you. My cat knows he's not allowed to die.

Despite the fact I loathe cats, I understand the pain that comes with a lost pet - for they often become members of the family. My deepest condolences.

Damn, nineteen. She would have been around before I started grade school and I'm finishing a B.A. That's old for a cat, like... 95 in human years?

I have been through many cats (not all live a long life, due to cars, etc).

I had one for 15 years. But, you know, there are always kittens.

Still have two cats (each about 6 months old).

I'm really sorry. :( I had a cat for the first 22 years of my life, and when she died it was horrible.

I don't see pets in the same way anymore. They're not just commodities to buy and sell, they're people. Nonhuman but people.

Absolutely. My dog has more real personality than many human beings I've met.

My cat had to be put down earlier this year for kidney problems, as well... She was nearly 18. She lived for a year before that receiving treatment, which she did well on up until a week before she was put down. So, after so long, my fuzzy little gray kitty is no more...

Of course, she was living with my parents, as I couldn't take her with me when I moved out (and wouldn't have if I could - it wouldn't have been fair to her), and I ended up getting a kitten on my own just about a month before she was put down. She's a rambunctious, 6-month-old, black and white shorthair; playful, athletic, and endearingly stupid. She's lying in my lap right now, trying to get her paws on my earphone cord, and occasionally chomping at the zipper on my sweatshirt.

I'm so very sorry to hear that. I know that if I lost my son Clyde (my cat) I would not be taking it well at all.

Pets become family, and have personality, though really that's more of a reflection of your own personality staring back at you in the face. You just usually don't see it because the face looking at you isn't your own. I raise my glass to your cat.

My condolences to you. I don't know how it is to lose a pet yet, but my dog is nearing 14 and I know it's coming, and it just breaks my heart to think about it.

RIP Audrey!

Too true.

My cat (Tiddlywinks, or Tiddles for short) died on new years day this year - still miss her very much.

I offer a photo of kittens. I took this in October - they're both 9 months old (awwww)

Just remeber all the good times you had with your kitty, and that 19 is an extremley long time for a cat. My aunt had a cat that was 21 (no joke) and towards the end he could barley move.

I'm sorry to hear that though, my first hedgehog died a couple years ago and I have two cats, and they're ten and nine now. I can only hope they'l live to something like 19.

19 is a good age.

A few months ago we had to put down our eldest cat due to kidney failure. He was only 15, and I had hoped that he would live longer than his predecessor (lived until 16 before kidney failure).

The interesting thing though, not a few weeks before, we found an abandoned kitten in the Back yard, on the verge of dying to dehydration. So exhausted that a snail had actually crawled up on it and just gave the little guy a finishing touch on the most pathetic image one could ever see. We nursed the little guy back to health, and when my family and I look back on it, we figure that Newton (so named because of a penchant for falling off of things... "Always testing gravity!") was meant to be the replacement cat.

Now our next oldest cat is 9 years old, and I hope he proves healthy enough to make it past 17 at least. He's a feisty one, so there's a good chance.

Sorry to hear that :( I got two of my own.

I suggest you get another kitten. It won´t make up for your loss but you´ll feel better loving a cat again. :)

I'm sorry.

I lost my cat about two years ago and still have to fight tears when I stumble upon a picture or something, and we had to put or dog to sleep earlier this week and I've been crying my fucking eyes out over it, so.. I know how you feel. There's not a lot one can say, so: Feel better soon.

Big consoling fluffles to the OP and everybody else who lost a pet recently. It sucks. Badly. :(

To inject some levity in the thread - this reminds me of something I once read on a another forum: "My cat just came home with a slug stuck to its belly fur. I have the slowest moving cat in the world." =)

My condolences.

Losing a beloved pet is like losing your best friend.
My dog is a 15 year old Golden Retreiver mix, and he is getting very old.
He has been my dearest friend for almost half of my life, and seeing him go may be the hardest thing I will ever do.

However, I have 15 years of memories of great times I had with this mutt, and when you weigh it out, its all worth it.

My cat's getting older, also, and even though he's forbidden to die, I'm sure it'll happen eventually.

My family's cat died just under a year ago. We got her from Batersea dogs home to be a mouser. She did a fantastic job and we loved from day she first came to your house to day she died. She was scatty and neurotic as anything though. I think the home said she had been abused as a kitten and were glad that someone was taking her into a family. Our family probably didn't help much as we moved 4 times whilst she was with us. But throughout, she was always a fantastic cat, even when she turned into a dribbler when she got. She was 19 when she died. May both Audrey and Miranda rest in peace. You have my sympathies.

My condolences to Unabashed Greed and everyone else who has lost a member of the family recently (regardless of whether the family member is animal or human).

It may take a long time, possibly even years, but eventually the pain will be a lot less. Just try to remember the good times and also focus on the future and on all the good persons (and things) who/that are still in your life.
