Wisdom Teeth

Have you got yours get? Have they still yet to come through? Do you still have milk teeth? Did you have your wisdom teeth removed?

I just want to hear about other people's stories. Mainly because my own wisdom teeth seem to have decided it would be nice to erupt right in time for Xmas. It means I have to brush the back of my mouth extra carefully and use a saline solution for a mouth wash twice a day to prevent any chance of the gum getting infected.

I went to the dentist today and I pretty much told me everything I already knew. The only thing he did really do is give flood the area with an anti-septic wash. Since I've been washing my mouth with salt water I hardly think it is was that necessary. Told me to come back when the practice reopens after the holidays and gave me a prescription for antibiotics just in case. And then chared me £15 for the for the visit.

Charming. My government thinks I'm rich enough to pay for my own dentistry, but poor enough to be given £2,200 in grants. Government bureucracy is screwed up.

Anyway, on with everyone elses stories. Hopefully more interesting than mine. :)

When I was 17 my orthodontist made an X-ray and told me that my wisdom teeth had to be pulled soon.

I never went back.

That was 16 years ago. :/

Mine came through. I have no problems with them at all, they don't hurt or anything.

Mine came out from when I was around 18 to about 21 and I still have them. Since they're so far back it's very difficult to clean them properly and the dentist says there's very little decay, so he sealed them and we are going to see how they behave (although they haven't changed much in five years) and if they get worse I'll just have them pulled out.

I was told my wisdom teeth would never erupt as they had impacted below the gumline. But here they are. Causing a whole lot of achiness. I was then told if they did ever erupt that they would have to be pulled as my jaw was far too small. The dentist didn't comment on that so I'm going to keep quiet unless he deems it to be a problem.

I had three wisdom teeth, the fourth one never arrived. Two of them were crazy-funky. Not impacted, but weird. The other one seemed to be on a normal path, but had yet to break through the surface.

The one that broke through the surface never broke entirely through. Instead it left part of itself underground. It broke through when I was in Germany, and waking up at 4 am in a Jugendherberge with you mouth bleeding is more than a bit weird.

I had them removed the winter break of my freshman year of college, when I was nineteen. Actually I'd only been nineteen for a day when I had them removed, as per the fact that I had them taken out on December the sixteenth, 2004, my birthday being the fifteenth.

I woke up that morning and popped three valiums. When I got there, I had myself knocked out. I can remember the needles, counting needle one went in, needle two went in and needle three went in, they went to put needle four in, and I stop remembering.

After that, Vicodin made me sleep for a week straight, although I watched a couple of movies, which I cannot recall. And some I recall as being totally different. Much-crazy, much-crazy.

all mine came in nicely with no problems, never had an infection, dentist popped them out regardless whenever he was working in the area(to save the cost of anesthetic) cost $75........my daughter had hers removed by a surgeon $1,800:eek: he was done in 5 minutes:mad: ....

I got my top ones a few years back with no problems, and figured my bottom ones just weren't going to appear. Recently my best mate got his and was in agony for weeks til he had them pulled. Of course I was teasing him "mine didn't hurt at all" etc. Now three years after my first ones, the bottom ones have decided to come through in the most painful way :( Serves me right.

When they eventually have to come out, you may be hating life. I got mine out when I was 36, and it went okay, but the older you get, the denser your bone structure gets, and that can cause problem both with the extraction and the recovery.

I have a nice little print out from the dentist. It says that the bottom jaw teeth cause more problems as they tend to erupt at an angle as opposed to perpendicular to the gumline.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. My teeth are aching and unconciousness is the best painkiller available. I also only have parcetamol available in the house and I don't want to screw over my liver by over using the paracetamol.

I have one wisdom tooth coming through right now, and it's annoying me. Not because of pain, as there isn't any, but because it's coming in wonky and it's alone. Where the hell are my others, damnit!

Hence the ">.<". :(

My top wisdom teeth started coming through and hurting like hell earlier this year. Got referred to an oral surgeon, who x-rayed my mouth and said all four had to come out. So I took a Thursday and Friday off from work, had all four removed under general anesthetic on Thursday morning, turned into chipmunk girl for a week and slept for most of Thursday through Sunday (vicodin knocks me right out).

i'm 20 and my first one is coming through. it seems to be coming in alright, though i haven't had anybody look at it. i assume it's coming in alright because it doesn't hurt.
the only problem that i'm having with it is that since it's not at the same level as all my others yet, i'm having trouble brushing it, so everytime my tongue touches it, i notice that it's not as clean as the rest of them. this annoys me.

edit: woo! post 2^10

I just turned 21 and still have them and I so want to get rid of them. Every 4-6 months on of the bottom wisdom teeth(well the gums around them) they get very sore and possibly infected. Its soooo painful.....If can,,,get them out!

All 4 of mine were impacted. Had them removed one morning a couple of years back, then that afternoon I went to the dealership and bought my car and drove it home. It wasn't all that bad, but I elected for the laughing gas vs. anesthesia (less groggy, which is the worst part of the surgery).

At the time I was working at a motorcycle shop (summer work between college years). The day after my surgery I went back to work, and lo and behold my orthodontist pulled up on his motorcycle. Needless to say he was impressed that I was doing so well (that and I was the one working on his bike, hehe sweet irony).

That's a week I'll never forget.

There is this wonderful little product (at least here in the states) called Anbesol, its an orangish transparent liquid, tastes not-so-good, but will numb any pain you are having until you can get them either pulled or any infection gone..... God bless the maker of Anbesol.

the two wisdom teeth on the bottom started giving me trouble,so I pulled them myself.

the ones on top I had an orthodontist pull a year or so later.

He did a better job.

I had all of my wisdom teeth removed almost exactly a year ago. Nothing bad happened after the operation. I didnt have to take any painkillers or anything. Although right after the operation I was so groggy from the anesthesia that when I tried to walk out of the lobby I walked right into the door slamming my face on it.

My friend's operation didnt go so smoothly though. I think his suture tore open the day after the operation and he had to stick in a bunch of gauze to keep it from bleeding so much.

I got mine taken out in early summer of 2005, I was 18 then.
After being sedated, it was rather quick and painless.
Had to take some drugs and eat liquid foods for a week or so, but
other than that, its really nothing.

I had mine taken out but after they had been "impacting" some other teeth for a while. So I have some back molars that are kinda wonky.

I remember waking up all groggy and drugged afterwards. I think (as the nurse person was helping me walk out) I said something like, "I should do this more often."

And I was given some good medications. I got a refill too, though I didn't really need it. Yay recreational drug use!

I don't have my wisdom teeth......there aren't any in there, I lost some of my baby teeth and didn't have permanent teeth to grow in at all......:(

luckily they are mostly in the back so I don't look too hillbilly, however I do have two missing teeth in the frontish one that didn't ever grow in (no baby tooth either) and one that got knocked out in a fight.

My wisdom are all intact, fine, and rather helpful as super molars back there.

I actually had teeth removed to make space for them, though the dentist wanted to get rid of those teeth regardless. The antibiotic treatment for a childhood bout of scarlet fever permenantly altered my teeth. At the time it completely removed all enamel, and the four teeth furthest back just kind of degraded from them on out. The rest of my teeth managed to pull through, and now the dentist claims they are the toughest ones he's ever worked on.

Could be the two litres of milk I drink daily. :D

I got mine removed September 28th of last year, about 2 years prior to that my dentist said i should get them out soon.
My Lower left one was growing on or about a 45 degree angle, they only realy bothered me if i was eating corn chips, nuts or popcorn, small bits of those foods had a habit of getting stuck.

The lower elft one must have out a fair amount of pressure on my other lower teeth because one of my 2 lower front ones slightly overlaps the other, shame really seeing as i have always looked after my teeth, i guess it ain't so much of a big deal for me.

Hehe, just remember the OP actually asked for this :)

My wisdom teeth only partially errupted as I had the same problem as others. Jaw too small. This meant that I had flaps of gum over the sides of the teeth that stayed firmly down leaving me unable to clean them but still let them decay. I say the sides because the teeth had impacted but also grown in the only direction they had some room - sideways.

I had several years of trouble, tonsilitis every 2 months or so, taking a month to clear each time and the gums were constantly inflamed. The tonsilitis got so bad at one point that my tonsils actually bled and I had breathing trouble. The reason I was getting tonsilitis of course was that the wisdom teeth were decayed and every time I swallowed it was passing bacteria back down my throat.

Eventually an emergency trip to the dentist (not my normal one) got me put on a waiting list for surgery (this took another year or so to go through though). Eventually the day came and luckily I was clear of majour infections so they were able to operate. Under a general anaesthetic I had all 4 taken out. It was supposed to be only a couple of hours but it took 4.5 hours in the end and they had to break my jaw to get one of the teeth out. Luckily not so much that I had to be wired.

Healing took quite a while but 10 years on I have not had a single recurrence of tonsilitis and no pain at all from where my wisdom teeth are so, absolutely no regrets at going through the operation.

Anyone who is suffering from from impacted / infected wisdom teeth but is wavering over the ordeal of having them taken out my advice is if the surgeon is confident (s)he can do it with a low risk of nerve damage (theres a nerve through your jaw that supplies your face and they'll ALWAYS say there is some risk because they have to cover their arses) then go for it. Be brave, I understand completely why you might not want to go through it but it is worth it.

An ex girlfriend of mine had hers out and she did suffer some nerve damage, she lost some feeling in her chin and right side but it did return after a few months and she too is glad to not be having to take pain killers for her teeth every other week.
