Shane Warne is holding a press conference at midday today, Melbourne time. He’s expected to announce he will retire after the Sydney test, the end of the Ashes series.

Bugger. I’ll miss his brilliant bowling. Watching the cricket just won’t be the same without him. :(

On a very similar note, Glenn McGrath is also expected to announce his retirement. The Terminator will finally be stopped.

Australian cricket just won’t be the same without the pair of them.

I seem to remember the British press writing off the two of them after the last ashes. Yeah, shows how much they know.

Warne and McGrath probably feel better now than later, but you're right. It won't be the same without them.

I'm English, and all they've ever done is tear up our batting order. But if they're not doing that....well,that's just not cricket :P
It will be sad without them, they were fantastic to watch,Shane Warne's bowling left me open-mouthed half the time.'Tis sad.

I think we're going to struggle without McGrath and particularly Warne.

We've got some decent fast bowlers coming through, who I think will do a pretty good job in place of McGrath. Probably not as outstanding as McGrath has been, but still pretty good.

Warne's a different matter though. Stuart McGill could slot into the test team now, but he's not a long term solution, he's only a couple of years younger than Warne. We don't really have any standout young candidates for the job. An option might be Cameron White (http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/8291.html), the young leg spinning all-rounder who is captain of Victoria. His batting has improved enormously over the last season or so, but unfortunately his bowling hasn't progressed as well.

Yep, he's confirmed it. After the 5th test, it will be all over for the greatest leggie we've ever seen. :(

I'm very disappointed, I was hoping he would keep bowling for as long as possible. He's still in great form. :(

I thought Warny would hang around for a year or two yet. He's still bowling well, and has been injury free recently.

Losing them both will be a huge blow to Oz (but not to other teams! :p ).
Not just because they were/are brilliant cricketers (Warne definitely has to rate as one, if not the, best bowler ever) but because of their combination.
Having a fast at one end and a spinner at the other just screwed the opposition batsmen up no end.

I find it funny how news reports keep saying Warne will create history and break records by taking his 700th test wicket.
(Pedant alert!)
Technically every wicket he's taken for the last couple of years has been creating history and breaking records.
He was the first to get 699 wickets in tests for example.

700 wickets and not one from chucking. Certainly impressive feat.

I wish people would leave Murali alone already. He's been cleared.

As for Warney...good on him. While probably not the brightest off the field (incredibly naive, I would guess), he was one of the greatest cricketing minds ever, as far as poor little me can judge. He got batsmen out in their heads first, the ball came later.

Can't wait to welcome him to Channel 9. Maybe in another 40 or 50 years he'll be the next Richie Benaud.

I'd like to think 'no' but somehow, considering England's embarrassing performance so far in the Ashes, I think that's not going to happen. In any case, he and his team deserve to take the Ashes before his retirement.

I will miss him, if not Glenn, and it will be a great loss to cricket. Indeed, the best spinner in the world would be Murali:(

However, England would be the best test side on the planet!

Well, now Pigeon's thrown his hat in as well:

McGrath to retire after World Cup

Australian seam bowler Glenn McGrath has announced he will retire from international cricket after next year's World Cup.

Massive blow for Oz there. They've taken 1254 wickets between them.
Even though there are so good Oz bowlers out there, this is going to be a huge gap in their team.
Not just from Warne's and McGrath's talent, but also the uncertainty (even fear) just having them bowl would produce in the opposition's batsmen. One does wonder how many wickets they got over the last few years simply because the batsman facing them was nervous because of their reps.

McGrath leaving doesn't worry me a bit. Clark has come in and shown that he can fill that spot perfectly. He's even got a bit more variation (that leg cutter?) to play with if he wants to.

So who will be the first new pace bowler in the first post-Ashes test? Tait? Bracken? I'm hoping for Mitchell Johnson... Pretty much just because he is a Qlder.
