Go out for a pack of cigs and don't come back till New Year's?
My family doesn't do Christmas anyway. Just another day. And I plan on working on Christmas anyway.

well i did have to tell my mother in law that we are going to have christmas dinner at my sisters house instead of with them. does that count?
i just waited for an opening and blurted it out. they took it well
if you give your family notice and spend some small time with them during the holiday period they will probably be OK with it. if they arent, its best to let them know NOW that you wont be their christmas ornament for the rest of your life.

oohhh so you have to tell them you dont intend to visit them at all over the holidays.
you dont owe them an explanation of your plans. you are an adult and whatever reason you have for not going--be it being too busy or having a better offer--doesnt require further explanation. be firm. its setting the pattern for things to come so do it right this time and it will be easier in the future.
if you want to be a good son (?) you should do something about making that visit in 4 months special. parents have to learn to let their kids go but its nice to know that the kids still think about them.

2 years ago, everyone was here, but left late in the day to go on Holiday, stayed at home, had my own kind of fun.
But yes we had Christmas together, just not Boxing Day, New Years, and then the next week.

No, I get on well with my family & enjoy their company. I'm spending Christmas day with my girlfriend's family this year & I'll miss not being with my family.

I thought about it, thought about renting a small cabin in the mountains and just relaxing and enjoying Christmas by myself.
