I've really not payed much attention to the MP3 player market and the quality or desireableness of their products, but I think my wife would love having one so I figured I'd look for a good one that isn't iPod and is affordable (< $80).

I want mp3 only - video is a no go for now.

Any suggestions?

I do recommend this one though, I picked it up for my kid for about $30 and popped in a SD card and she has room for like 90 songs now.

I've heard good things about this (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Creative-Labs-1GB-Zen-Nano-Plus-ZNPBU1GB/sem/rpsm/oid/124360/catOid/-12952/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do).

Yes and thank you, but I first wanted opinions from the NSGers I know and love first :D

That includes you! *points at reader*

Now that you mention it, I recognize the name of that one as someone elses favorite.

Hmmm, a bit more expensive than the one Smunktastic recommended but maybe worth the extra for the memory as well as the good reviews which suggests quality and ease of use I imagine

I didn't know that you could get a 1Gig player so cheap, I would go with that one if you can, more room for music is always nice.

That's cute! I don't think I've seen one in stores, do you have to order it online?

my kid saw it at the grocery store a few weeks back on the "last minute gifts" isle for $29.00 and since I had a coupon for the store that if I spent more than $150 they would give me $20 and that put me at $159 I decided to buy it for the greedy little kid.

She is much quieter on the car ride now, she listens to her MP3 player, my older one plays Yahtzee on my cell phone and I get to listen to talk radio........everyone is happy.

Cool. My mom is thinking about getting a little mp3 player, I already sent her the link for the one I mentioned but I'll send her a link for this one too.

I don't know about the user interface with the other one, but the one I linked to is easy enough to use that my 3 year old can move through the menu by herself with very little instruction (she can't read well......so she needs some help) if your mom can read though she is golden. ;)

Wrong, you just think that because iPod dominates the market. Anything that isn't iPod is affordable.

I vote go with the RCA Lyra MX2030. Pain in the ass to find, but newegg has it. 512MB, SD expandable, comes with a FM transmitter - $39.99. (I bought a 2GB card for $46 on newegg to go with it, have 263 songs now, just don't stack folders too deep or it reads bad, 1GB cards will go probably less than half that, you can get 2GB less than that)

there are lot's to choose from, many brands under $100.....my kids have Creative-very inexpensive, and Scandisk............important to go have a look and try out the controls, at this price range ergonomics/ease of use is the important thing, some of these things don't work well with adult fingers....

I have found that most sunglasses with built-in mp3 player are surprisingly good. At playing mp3s that is ;)
Downsides are that they can generally only hold 512-1 GB, have little lights that blink while playing something on the side and might not be that comfortable, since they are "one size fits all".

All I've got to say is don't buy a Sony!

The actual players are fine, but the software that you have to use is awful! It takes all my will power to refrain from stamping on mine every time I need to put anything on it. :headbang:

I like iPods, but they're not cheap. OTOH, I just got a 4th gen 20gig for free from my roommate (he replaced it with an 80gig iPod video, as the 20gig is having hard drive problems, and will have to be replaced). It still works, though. :D

I ended up ordering the Creative Labs Zen Nano.

rush delivery!

My wife never actually expressed interest in having one but I think she will be happy once she loads it up with music and takes it on a long trip.

A couple new CD's to fill it with music will be part of the present.

She also gets a bunch of twilight zone dvds, the Nightmares and Dreamscapes by Stephen King DVD set, and a couple of books.

I want to buy her a good hand held back massager as well but couldnt find anything with good enough reviews.

oh and I ran out of money anyway so it will probbly be a good valentines present.
