I can't? Really, I can't?

What if I'm not FROM the USA?

Can I not feel patriotic THEN?

Sonny Jim, this here's a UK server with more people on it who are NOT from the USA than perhaps you realize.

I'm FROM the USA, and the Anthem only does it for me on certain occasions. And no, that does not include sporting events, except perhaps the Olympics or other world stage events.

I've got nothing against pride and patriotism, but when it's applied with such a can of Stars 'n Stripes brand spray paint, it gets really, really old, really, really quick.

I love my country, but I think we should start seeing other people. Literally.

After listening to that I am proud that we have the freedoms that we do. Mostly though, I am very relieved that Bush will be leaving office in a couple years and hopefully he won't do any more damage to the things of our country that makes this anthem so powerful. The pictures though added up to some pathetic propaganda.

I don't feel patriotic.

I admit, I didn't watch your YouTube video. I'm on a slow connection. But given that listening to my national anthem and watching flags waving has never done much for me before, I don't see why it would this time.

My country has its good qualities and its bad qualities. Overall, I think it's a fairly decent country to live in, but it could always be better. Because I care about my country, I will respect the things that are good about it and work to fix the things that aren't so good - which seems a lot more "patriotic" to me than getting teary-eyed over a piece of cloth.

and the singing was pretty bad too, along with the poorly cropped images.

nope, no patriotism because of a bad song taken from an even worse poem, sung over poorly done imagery.

The range on the Anthem is only an interval of a 12th* (low tonic, or root, or "do" on "oh-oh say" to the dominant, or 5th, or "sol" above the upper tonic on "glare" and "free"). The reason why it feels so rangy is because people forget to start it so that "oh-oh say" is on their lowest comfortable and projecting note. If you start it too high, you're in for a rude surprise in the B section (form is AABC).

*Four octaves would be an interval of a 29th, for comparison.

This is a much better anthem, especially for those of us left of center.

In the original version of "This Land Is Your Land" Guthrie protested class inequality with the verse,

In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?
and protested the institution of private ownership of land with the verse,

As I went walking, I saw a sign there;
And on the sign there, It said, 'NO TRESPASSING.'
But on the other side, It didn't say nothing.
That side was made for you and me.

Plus, the Soviet national anthem is of excellent quality. The US national anthem is lame.
I think a lot of that has to do with the quality of the singers. The US National Anthem is always done by one singer (usually a woman), but the Soviets had an entire military choir to belt out a few verses about the Party of Lenin.

What you're (OP) describing is fandom, not patriotism. You identify with and "root for" your country in much the same way you cheer a baseball team.

This is common for Americans. Indeed, I would argue that there can be no such thing as American patriotism, since Americans have no concept of patria, the fatherland. At most, Americans have nationalism--an ideology rather than an ethic. This may sometimes resemble true patriotism, but deep down it is not the same thing.

How come it's ok to mock Saddam Hussein for trying to brainwash people into loving him with cheesey music videos, but it's not OK to mock conservatives for falling in with that exact same mentality here?Who has said: "it's ok to mock Saddam Hussein for trying to brainwash people into loving him with cheesey music videos, but it's not OK to mock conservatives for falling in with that exact same mentality(...here?)" ?

WTF are you on about?

Well, to be fair, the original piece of music the anthem is taken from is sublime. The official version has had its balls chopped off. Such is the way of centralised bureaucracy.

If it's supposed to be American it should have one more star in the middle. I don't think that 12 figures anywhere prominently in American history.

who said its supposed to be american?

Eh? You want to make the flag of the European Union look American? What? Where? Why?
As for the numbers, you can read up a little here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_flag

I still need to get one for myself. I only bought a little German flag this summer for you know what... ;)

Besides, for those who don't like the current flag design - I don't think this one is any better...

No, that is simply a prototype of what a flag consisting of the 25 color patterns of all member states could look like.

From the Wiki article I linked to above:

"Since the time of the first drafts of the barcode it has never been officially used by commercial or political institutions. During the Austrian EU Presidency 2006 it was officially used for the first time, but only as part of the logo of the presidency, not as a new EU flag. The logo has already been used for the EU information campaign which will also be continued during the Austrian EU Presidency. Overall this design was badly received. People compared it to a beach towel, a packet of refresher sweets, wallpaper, the TV test card and deckchair fabric.[5]

It should be noted that this idea was never a serious one and the designer himself indicated that it was only a concept for an exercise and never intended as a genuine proposal to replace the present flag. The European Commission also stated that no plans were ever made to consider replacing the flag adopted from the Council of Europe."

Nah. For all our stupidity we are unlikely to actually start using architects to design our flags and our graphic designers to plan out our buildings.

I hope.

I prefer a number of other anthems over that one. Not sharing the OP's nationality, I can't agree that I feel a sense of patriotism. A sense of dread, perhaps - dread or apprehension.

It's a proven fact (as opposed to an unproven fact) that all national anthems, by default, suck. So I don't feel patriotic in the least. Maybe if the US changed its anthem to something actually interesting (like a weird progressive rock-metal mixture, the kind of thing that's written in 17/4 and includes a contrabass sax solo; then again, such things might be a bit tough for massive amounts of people to sing at patriotic rallies, but all the better).

little known fact - american flags make excellent beach towels and rain ponchos

Not really, most of them are made of cheap polyester and are so thin as to be translucent. They'd make a crappy towel or poncho. Nice bib though! Also suitable as kindling or if carefully melted drive-way sealant.

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
And stood against him,

And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

Besides, it's a drinking song, not a quality piece of music, so why don't people simply treat it that way?
