Saturnalia is a major ancient Roman festival centered around their god Saturn. It was customary to be merry and celebrate openly, wearing colorful clothing and eating plenty of food. The festival occurs from December 17 to 23, so there is plenty of time to celebrate. Saturnalia is arguably one of the influences for placing Christmas in December.

Traditional foods include bread, artichokes, chicken, scallops, eggs, olives, wine, mushrooms, pork and seasonal fruit, especially apples.

So, get drunk, be merry and have fun.

there was no Christianity that the time

That's because they were busy worshipping planets instead of god.

Actually the ancient Roman pantheon was not based on astrology. Rather, planetary objects such as planets have traditionally been named for Roman gods. In other words, Romans did not worship the planet of Jupiter. Rather Jupiter was the name of the head of the Roman pantheon, and the planet Jupiter is named after him.

In other words, yes the ancient roman pantheon predates christianity, no the romans didn't actually worship planets, and I was actually kidding.

What explanation do they need?
The planets are there and exert an obvious, quantifiable physical influence on people's daily life, by way of proximity and/or even just to gaze upon in silent, appreciative awe.
And hope.

Mutates into Santa Clause thanks to Coca Cola I might add. After which the Father Christmas figure was adjusted to look like Santa.

Complicated ? Nah. Just a very, very all-inclusive festival this Christmas thingy is :)

Dude, we NS'ers aren't TOTALLY ignorant. We KNOW what "Saturnalia" is. I agree with the Christmas crack, that plus Hannukah or whatever. And I PERSONALLY don't think Cronus deserves a holiday, even if he did rule the Roman "Golden Age". His poor father "Yuri" now speaks an octive higher, and his off-spring had an unwanted barf-slide.

We had an early Saturnalia party at school for Latin club a week ago (since we're on break this week.) It was really fun. There was plenty of food, and we gave each other Saturnalia presents.:)

I never implied that anyone was ignorant, I was just wishing everyone a wonderful winter and a happy saturnalia. Also, Merry Christmas.
