A Christmas Story

A letter that i just got from my dad who's in afghanistan(with private stuff edited out of course):
One of the most touching things i have ever seen happened today. We got some intel that there was going to be money collected for an unkown cause and seperate intel that an unkown shipment was going to be delivered to the same village the very next day. We naturally thought that this was extremely suspicious especially for a poor village that mostly relied on us for food and medical attention. We set up a team to keep a watch on the collection and when we approached it they all tried to hide the money. Knowing that we could always intercept the package, we allowed them to keep it. We set up a checkpoint to stop the package but they slipped by an a backroad. The next morning, the leaders of the village came to our base in a truck with 50 afghan rugs as christman gifts. It turned out that they could actually only afford 15 or so and the rest were hand made. We were all so touched that they went out of their way and risked actually being shot or arrested by us in order to show their gratitude.
I just thought that was a story worth sharing. Definately one of my new favorite christmas stories.

That is touching. I hope your dad gives you an even better gift and gets home safe and sound. Merry Christmas.

shouldn't those rugs be Persian? I say shoot the cheap basterds :p

But seriously how nice though slightly worrying that they managed to slip past a checkpoint and deliver goods

An incredibly sweet gesture. Especially since it's a holiday they don't even celebrate. For them to recognize it's importance to Christians is really sweet.

Nice to see the military is doing its usual bang-up security job.

A great story... and Greater news that your Father is alive and well and that the villagers appreciate them.

Merry Christmas!

Yeah his unit just took over their AO from a british unit that had less than control over the area and didn't relay info on routes used by locals that take a bit of time to find.

This is his third tour, 1 in iraq, this is his second in afghanistan. He was infantry the first two tours but he switched MOS's and now he's intel. He's not really in danger now like he was before but you still never know.

But not so much my faith in US security forces.

Unfourtunately, large swaths of land in afghanistan go un patrolled. The 200 men in my fathers AO have "control" of a little more than 4000 sq miles. In case you missed that the first time, 4000 sq miles. A little difficult to set up a checkpoint on every road in that area.

Well, i did say it to piss you off but it is true. They took over from a piss poor british unit. Not saying all british units are bad at all. There are bad units in every military. This one barely left the base and what knowledge they did obtain they didn't pass on to the relieving unit.

Not even worth it anymore. They don't have to tell anything to an incoming unit and a U.S. unit complaining about a British unit is too politcally damaging. I'm pretty sure that that unit would already be dissolved along with the intel anyway.

no please give the unit so you have proof that your not full of shit and also so something is done about it (don’t worry it can be anonymous hell I will report it for you so long as you give me the unit)

do telegram it since keeping it hush hush is for the best

Ask again in a month but this is quite a serious thing and so I will put it through the vast bureaucratic machine and somebody should get a telling off in 2012

If you could provide some very loose information on there stay it would be helpful but remember to keep this info fairly sketchy since I am a stranger on the interweb
