A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering five young women working as prostitutes whose naked bodies have been found within ten miles of Ipswich, Suffolk, over the last three weeks.

The man was arrested at his home in Trimley, near Felixstowe at 7:20 this morning, police said.

Hope they got the right guy - I guess we'll know in a week or two, if there are further murders of the same type.

It's good that the police are also keeping quiet about this, so as not to damage their case.

If whoever's doing it has any sense left in him (which he probably doesn't), and is not the man arrested, he'll not commit any more murders just yet.

BBC has more info:

Even have an interview with him. Apparently he knew two of the women.

Sounds a bit like that case a couple of years back with Ian Huntley who tried to be helpful with the police in an effort to hide the fact he was the murderer himself.

I wonder if anyone has noticed that the media is the calling the victims women before prostitutes now. I remember a thread about that on NSG. Most people seemed to be quite outraged. The same night I saw a news report on the BBC where the reporter talked about how there was outrage that the media were calling these women prostitutes first and foremost. The reporter then later summarised here segment in which she called the victims prostitutes before women... She was a sharp one.

About as sharp as a sack of wet mice...

They are women, so its fair enough to call them that. They are prositutes to, but that's thier "job" if you will. Look at it this way if it was any person of any other (for want of a better word) profession, they would be classed by gender not their job. They should be treated equally, and now their dead we should treat them with respect.

As for the arrest, its been very quick. I think they've just arrested the first person they could in order to get media applause. The murder still might be out there. Although I hardly think this a Jack the Ripper style case, like the newspapers would have it, what with forensics and so on nowadays.

I remember they were calling this person the Suffolk Ripper. Very disturbing that this guy killed these women. I don't know why serial killers tend to kill prostitutes. I hope they've caught him and he'll end up in prison.

because they willing get into the car with a complete stranger and drive off into secluded areas without a struggle.

Hmmm, if this is the guy...you think the cops will be saying, "Okay girls, you can get back on the streets now..."

I think that makes them easier targets, yes....but behind that, I think, is the knowledge that society at large values the lives, and consequently whereabouts, of these women much less than the lives of other human beings.

These kinds of murderers could very likely overpower a woman, force her into their car, and go hack them up somewhere. But they know that within hours, at a minimum, a massive hue and cry will be raised. No such pressure with prostitutes.

Yeh mainly, but I suppose they also feel that society doesn't value them as much, which is sadly true. I'm sure the media would be more outraged if these string of murders, done by the same person, was done to people who all worked in the same office. All with great oppurnunities in the future. Prositutes have most likly been abandoned by their families and what true friends they have etc, people don't tend to notice so much if they dissapear for a while.

What I don't understand however is why the murderer has been so obvious, taking women from the same area and dumping them off main roads going out of Ispwich, I wonder if they thought they would get away with it.

And on the Ripper angle, Ripper's murders were A LOT more gruesome, what with cutting open the women and messing up their insides.

Yeah I've noticed that... when has that ever worked?

"Oh, I hope they won't catch me... so I'll go out of my way to help their investigation... INSTEAD OF DOING NOTHING AND SHUTTING THE F*** UP!"

Because we all know, it's the serial killers who help who are the ones that it takes decades to catch.

Makes me think either A: they're all idiots, or B: they really do want to get caught.

I think its a token arrest, the police go around and talk to all the 'mushers' as they call them, (Mushers is the police term for what people who use hookers are called).

Don't see as many hitchhikers around these days...

Not like a hitchhiker...like a prostitute...a easy target.

Why are people in Ipswich eating mince pies?

The tarts are all in the river.
