Indian Athlete fails gender test...

This is a bit confusing. A female Indian athlete failed a gender test at the Asian Games in Doha this year. However, she passed one last year at the Asian games in South Korea.
I mean... I'm at a loss for words... how? The only think I can think of is bribes have exchanged hands at some point... or maybe the woman had a sex change at some point and forgot to notify anyone.

WTF's a gender test and what does it include?

Looks at your chromosomes, sees if you're XX, XY or some screwed up syndrome with extras or missings.

She might be a Chimera. One ovum penetrated by two sperm simultaneously usually either aborts or twins, but in rare cases it grows up perfectly normal - except that some of it's cells have XX and some have XY. Quite uncommon in humans, but it can happen.
Why couldn't the bastards have called it a sex test........
"Indian Athlethe fails sex test" is sooooo much funnier.
I was going to post this, but my knowledge of gender tests is rather....limited.I assumed it was some officials looking up the athletes skirts/down their trousers and stamping their privates with a "pass" or "fail" stamp. But that's just me.

That's the Thai. Ladyboys are fully accepted there - some sort of a cultural thing.
Could be 'she' has Swyer syndrome:

iirc, previously the gender test was just a peek down the pants. They abolished that sometime in the 70s and started chromosome testing.

If the testing board involves a gynecologist, I have the impression that after failing a chromosome test, there's probably an anatomical examination.
If the runner has "none of the characteristics", that seems to imply that there are no ovaries, no uterus, no vagina, etc., in addition to wrong chromosomes.

she does. They're just up in her 'uterus'.
When human fetus develops initially there's no difference between a female and male. The XY chromosome causes more testorone to be produce which then helps in the development and dropping down/out of male testes.
male fetuses with Swyer syndrome don't produce enough testorone for this to happen, so outward male sex characteristics don't happen. The gonads stay up inside where the ovaries would reside.
They're literally born a girl.
Usually no-one notices anything wrong until puberty fails to occur. And in a place like India, it could well be that the parents didn't think anything odd so never took their child to be tested.
Incidently, due to the gonads working (just nowhere near the level of the average male), 'she' would have secondary male sex characteristics - as in prnounced cheekbones, strong jaw, wide shoulders, narrow hips, more muscle mass (and sometimes no body hair). This could well have given her an advantage in her sport.

do they help with aerodynamics or something?
anyway i thought pronounced cheekbones was more a female characteristic. a pronounced brow-ridge is a male sex characteristic. not sure what advantage that would serve though!

Everyone knows that the swaying of testicles to and fro during sprinting helps balance out the movement of the legs, provided the testicles are large enough.
And the flapping penis serves as a balance, much like the tail of a kangaroo, except backwards...

Can't go by breasts - plenty of man boobs abound...
Besides, Kate Moss is pretty flat chested, but no one says she's not female...

It's a not-very-well protected dirty secret that many female athletes stunt the growth of their feminine characteristics through body overstress. The human body just isn't designed for that level of performance on a continuous basis. The male body is better able to handle the strain, but tends to self destruct spectacularly when it reaches it's endurance peak (shattered ankles, multiple disk failure in the back, muscles tearing themselves apart - it can be pretty gruesome), but females tend to underdevelop. The worst example I've seen was a girl in her twenties, a gymnast, who frankly was pre-pubescent. She needed severe hormone treatments, and probably never became fertile.
I'm firmly of the opinion that professional sports should be restricted to 18+.

I was just mentioning all secondary male-sex characteristics!
Interestingly, all the ones I mentioned (wide shoulders, jaw, cheekbones, narrow hips, lower body fat, taller than average) are same traits as viewed as desirable in females, especially models.
A few years ago I did a pysch paper on gender issues (which is why I know of this syndrome). I totally convinced my flatmate (and a couple of others) that Elle MacPherson was really a guy with Swyer syndrome.
Cow had to ruin it for me by getting pregnant.

That's true. Most international level female athletes suffer from irregular periods. Most female endurance athletes (esp marathon runners) stop menstrating completely. Stress on the body and not enough body fat are the usual causes.
In Soviet Russia and China, female gymnasts were sometimes forced to get pregnant then abort. When pregnant, a female's body produces some hormone that helps with flexibility (it's actually to help relax and expand the pelvis during childbirth).
Sport at top levels is pretty nasty.
