A friend showed this to me yesterday. It was pretty interesting, so I thought I'd share and see what you all think:
A couple of weeks ago, I polled approximately eighty ninth-grade students, asking each to write down as many superheroes as they could in five minutes. I neither added nor detracted to what my students wrote, nor did I tell them "yes" or "no" about what they had written; so, some of the "superheroes" they listed aren't, necessarily, what many of us would consider "superheroes." These were my results:

I also loved that birdman got mentioned. I love that show on adult swim. It's the only one I watch and/or actually percieve as funny. I loved the episode with the Scooby Doo crew. Classic.

I find it slightly discomforting that Yu-Gi-Oh! and SpongeBob actually made the list, among others.

I find it hilarious that eighteen people mentioned Barnacle Boy.I'd say that the last three are exactly what you'll hear if you conducted the poll in the whole world instead of just the United States. To be honest, after I read the title, those three came to mind as the most likely contenders for the first three places. Then again, they might have a bit of competition by Mao if the Chinese votes come in ;)

After seven classic characters who have been around for decades, comes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

And thus, a small part of my wasted childhood is vindicated! :p

What sucks is that nearly all of the superheroes the kids picked are popular from television and movies as opposed to reading a comic or a book. Disappointing.

Something tells me that the answer will significantly lower my faith in the human race.

Old? If you consider 23 old, sure. :p

Yes, the Turtles have been around for a couple of decades.

Spiderman and the Hulk are each TWICE as old as the Ninja Turtles.

I think that says a lot about the Turtles that they are nearly as popular as some of the biggest superhero names out there...and in less than half the time.

Seventeen times: Mermaid Man

Eighteen times: Barnacle Boy

Hmmmmmm.....You'd think barnacle boy would be mentioned less than Mermaid Man, he is his sidekick after all. Worst part is that they both beat aquaman considering that Mermaid Man is BASED on aquaman. OMG:rolleyes:
