Bob Mould or Michael Stipe?

I've been doing a lot of listening lately, and I decided that I had to make this thread.
In one corner, we have a large, bawdy, built Swede with a booming voice. In the other, we have a rather small object that appears to be a stick figure, but it has a soothing voice (and we all thought stick figures were mute!). Of course, being a stick figure doesn't make Stipe any less cool.

Notice how much different Stipe's vocal style is after 1983. Also note that it's very similar to Mould's.
Okay, let's hear it. Which artist does NS General prefer, after viewing the linked content?

No contest. Him being of the fag persuasion is also quite the boon.

He also makes much better music, in my opinion. And, he's not one to shy away from anybody. Not that I'm gay myself, but he's apparently great to hang out with.

REM went down faster than a Thai hooker after their second or third album. Someone should have told Michael Stipe he looked better with hair.
Incidentally REM minus Michael Stipe got together with singer/songwriter Warren Zevon [my man!] in the mid-80s and cut a very good album of blues covers under the name "Hindu Love Gods." Particularly noteworthy are their covers of Raspberry Beret and Battleship Chains.
I know it doesn't really have anything to do with Stipe, but I figured some REM fans might appreciate it, since it's basically REM but with Zevon singing instead of Stipe. It's a shame they only made the one album.

All of this, and no comments on Mould? For shame.
I'm thinking of buying a Who album for Christmas... Seeing that you're a fan, which one should I get? I know that Tommy is great, but are there any others that might be worth a better look?

Meh, not my cup of tea all too often, but he is cuter than Stipe - especially now that he's lost weight.

No need for over-compensation.
but he's apparently great to hang out with.
I hear he's basically an inventory at "Blowoff" events, meaning he's into the whole bear scene; again, one more thing to give him the edge over Stipe.

I'm not overly familiar with Mould, to be honest. Never followed Husker Du that closely.

Tommy was the first Who album I laid hands on and it worked for me, but as hard as it may be to believe, I generally regard Who's Next as a superior album. However, it's got a bunch of songs you've probably already heard [Baba O'Reily, Won't Get Fooled Again, Bargain, Behind Blue Eyes etc.] so if you really want some "new" and exciting Who stuff I'd suggest Quadrophenia.

1: Yeah, there was a period where he really looked terrible. He had lost weight in the early 1990's, but he looked like a cancer patient, as he had no muscle mass. Now, he looks great, generally speaking.
2: In all honesty, I almost posted without adding that comment about myself. But, I thought better of it, because a few people on General have accused me of being gay when I do these things, so...
3: Yeah, and he uses the "LoudBomb" alias. There's footage of him being a DJ at one of the events in DC... Pretty good stuff. He also has some LoudBomb mixes on his latest album (well, they're on the Deluxe LP set, so it'll run you about $20).

1: Follow the links and go from there. Whether you'll like his stuff or not is entirely up to you.
2: Sounds good, but I think I'll just go with Tommy, seeing how much I like Pinball Wizard and all.

Well, I was thinking of adding John Lydon as a third, but he's just so much different (musically) that I just ditched it.
I decided to do this, because I found that Stipe's vocal style was very similar to Mould's after about 1985 or so, when Flip Your Wig was released.

Better ones? Aye. The Who Sell Out, the expanded CD version of Live At Leeds and (although dangerously close to FM rock) Who's Next. Quadrophenia and My Generation are also pretty darn good, but not as immediate.
Best tune they ever recorded in their entire career is Armenia City In The Sky, a cover on The Who Sell Out LP, by the way.

I listened to Magic Bus from the CD version, and it's one of the most over-blown and boring renditions of a song that I've ever heard.
My problem is that it has way too much filler, and they could've done so much more with the time they took up (7+ minutes!). My problem is, Rush know how to extend their songs and do a damn good job of actually making them better by doing so (Closer To The Heart, YYZ, and Tom Sawyer being the best examples). I just felt totally unimpressed by Magic Bus on Live At Leeds.
Speaking of bands/artists who make their material better when playing live, Bob Mould does an outstanding job of that. His Live At Brussels set (The Last Dog And Pony Show Tour, final show) is truly excellent, and has some of his best vocal work. Egoverride is probably the highlight, though every song is good.
