UK train pass?

I want to move down south, but I've worked out that it will cost me a minimum of £30 each day to travel to uni and back on the train if I'm in every day. I know there's a Railcard that allows me up to a third off fares (but there is a minimum price if travelling before 10am) but are there any other passes that will save me more money?

There's the Young Person's Railcard that gets you 30% off, and there's the Network Railcard, again 30%, but it only works in some bits of The South. They're not cumulative.

Booking in advance tends to get you cheaper fares, and some companies - Midland Mainline, for instance - do some very cheap singles if you book early enough. Much cheaper to buy two cheap singles than a return for the same journey.

I miss my YP card. I'm officially an Old Person. And too far north for a Network Railcard to be of any use :(

Edit:
£30/day * 5 days = £150/week. You could just move nearer your university? Not even London rents are that bad, if you're sharing, and you'll get to do the University social stuff which is at least half the point anyway.

At 30 quid a time, the minimum fair (8 for a single, 16 for a return) won't affect you.
You could also try a season ticket, but I'm not sure if you can use a railcard with them.

But... but that's a pepper... and you called it a pancake...

*Head explodes*

As to the passes, I'm pretty sure the YP card is the best you'll get.

You want a season ticket.

£30? Where exactly are you traveling to and from? I can get two singles Birmingham to London and then back again for less than £15...

Find out which train company you'll be traveling with and then check if they do season tickets using the above link.

Down here, train fares are pretty much a lottery- one week a Young Person's Return from Gillingham to Sheffield was £45, the next it was £22. Same day, same time. Get the YP railcard, but still cross your fingers whenever you're checking fares. Travelling before 10am isn't to be recommended, especially going through London.

I do have to wonder, why would you want to move away from Uni, if you're already there and have to go there often?

And Mooseica is right about the pepper/pancake. *headexplode*

What has gone wrong with public transport here in the UK? It's terrible. :(

I wish it was as good as Germanys. I don't even have to get on a bus over there, the trams go pretty much everywhere. We should have monorails (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Wuppertal_Schwebebahn_2005.jpg) like in Wuppertal.

Bus tickets are extortionate and you have to pay even more for a day/weekly ticket if you need to use different bus companies. Trains are also expensive and they STILL havn't built them tramroads in Greater Manchester.

The government should nationalise all public transport and attempt to sort it out. They certainly can't do any worse. And they should build them tramroads they promised us!

If you are moving into or near to London you could get an Oyster card. I'm not sure how much you save with them but they sure are convenient.

I sell train tickets for a living. It is the Network Card that has a minimum fare of £10. If you are a full time student OR under 30 then yu can get a Young Paerson's Railcard, still a third off but minimum fare i only £8 before 930am. If you let me know what stations your travelling between and how often I go into more detail for you.

The train companies charge less for popular journeys, and more for less popular journeys. So to get to Birmingham from London costs you £15 but to get from Lancaster to Plymouth (for example) could cost you over £50...

It's a disgrace.

 Why on earth would you want to move away from the uni youre attending? Especially far enough away that the journey costs you £30. How long will it take to travel?

It's a disgrace.Christ... here was me trying to show you up by trying to see what price I could get for a single Lancaster to Plymouth in mid March 07. Cheapest available for a no-changes train was £101 for an open single...

Hey, I recognise some names here. Complusive Depression and Ollieland... hmm... I think I remember seeing Gruenburg the other day as well.

Damnit, I can't remember the government spy's nation name. Then there was TG, and Stalin, but I've had to endure them once so I remember fine... Then there was Pure Metal and Glitziness later on... Who else. I know I'm missing some people.

Ah yes, Rhursbourg. But that's what happens if you're shy and don't puke all over the place - I find it hard to remember you. I have to say it wasn't a good trade off on Gruenberg's part.

... 'What's a train?' *wonders how Rhursbourg got to the flyer*

And Ollieland... LIES, you knew your cover was blown and went out to the nearest opticians to buy a disguise...
