Lol! :D

Actually, I found this part a bit more frightening...
European officials said their governments did not rely on Google searches but came up with nearly identical lists to the one U.S. officials offered.
So the Europeans normal, non-google methods of finding people to sanction that they presumably use regularly are as effective as Google? :|

Err... You do realise that Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) is quite common (common enough to have the acronym I gave above).

The real problem here not that the State Department is using OSINT, but that the CIA isn't sharing it's intel, as cited in the first paragraph of the article.

When the State Department recently asked the CIA for names of Iranians who could be sanctioned for their involvement in a clandestine nuclear weapons program, the agency refused, citing a large workload and a desire to protect its sources and tradecraft.

The bungled founding of the CIA (hint: using former OSS feild operatives to build your central intelligence clearinghouse on, and allowing them to carry out the same sorts of bops they did at the OSS, is a bad idea) has hurt US intell ops for the last 60 years. The creation of yet another agency afte 9/11 just makes it worse.

Already exists, as an attempt at a solution to the failures of the current system.

Spy agencies now share the Wikipedia way
It is hoped that the new software will make collaboration easier.
By Greg Miller, Times Staff Writer
November 1, 2006

Washington — The CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies have created a computer system that uses software from a popular Internet encyclopedia site to gather content on sensitive topics from analysts across the spy community, part of an effort to fix problems that plagued prewar estimates on Iraq.

The system, dubbed Intellipedia because it is built on open-source software from Wikipedia, was launched earlier this year. It already is being used to assemble intelligence reports on Nigeria and other subjects, according to U.S. intelligence officials who on Tuesday discussed the initiative in detail for the first time.

Well, my dad works for NSA, and I know that they look for people with ties to Al-Queida using the internet, among other things. There are tons of websites out there! Of course, most of them are offline now, but internet archives are amazing. You can find old websites if you have access to these archives, and some are basically terrorist membership lists. Let this be a reminder also that anything you put online is basically permanent...somewhere.
