S.A.D. lamps?

Does anybody have a light that is meant for Seasonal Affective Disorder? I'm very curious about it, because I'm thinking of getting one. Does it work? What is the best one? How do you know if you have S.A.D.? Does it work for other things like they say, like regular depression, circadiam rhythm problems, PMS, etc? How do you know how much and how often to use it?

I hope this thread doesn't get moved.

I've heard of such things, and heard that they can be effective at relieving some of the symptoms of SAD. Don't have one myself, though, and I haven't hread if they're good in treating anything else.

lol. slight joke there. its just a "normal fiesta-ish-colored lightbulb."

just wondering, but SAD is involved (simply) with the changes in weather and there not being as much light... would simply having more light in your room/office help?

It would help to be outside more... even a rainy day has more light than a normal bulb (at least I have read that somewhere).

Generally it's natural light that they're after, as electric lights don't exactly put out the same color or quality as such light.

Although, if you really wanted to, you could set off hydrogen bombs and get a light roughly similar to that of the sun.

Great idea, how about every year we have a nuclear war. It would solve SAD.

Seriously it is possible to buy daylight bulbs for lambs, there are usually used by artists and in crafts as the colours easy to distingwich.

I have a Sadelite lamp. It seems to be at least partially effective in eliminating the effects of SAD.

Check out the information at this site about SAD.

The Sadelite is the only model I've tried, but it seemed better than many other models given the specs.

my dad has one. i'm not entirely sure he was ever officially diagnosed with S.A.D. but he does get depressed sometimes. i think it cost about £40 but i can't be certain. you're supposed to use it every evening when it starts to get dark i think cuz it's supposed to replace daylight.

I read someplace that you're actually not supposed to use it in the evening or you won't sleep at night. I'm not sure if that's just for circadiam rhythm correction or not though.

Oh! How do you, personally, use it?

A friend of mine uses only colored light bulbs in her house, if you can believe it. Not just one color, either...in one multi-bulb fixture she's got green, blue, and red. Her house is VERY depressing to be in, it's very dark and weird. :(

i think you're only meant to have it on until it would be dark if it was summer. not right up til you go to bed. just to replace the daylight which you're missing during the day from it getting dark so early.

Hmm, alright. I'd like to hear from anybody that actually uses one to see what they do.

At least with SAD you know you're feeling low because of the season, if you got a SAD lamp and you were still depressed, then you've lost your light at the end of the tunnel.

I suppose you're right, at that.

At that point you may be denying true depression under the guise of SAD.

Actually, I may look into SAD.
