I haven't been getting a lot of new music listening now, as I tend to avoid mainstream stuff (which basically represents radio and tv) and I was wondering is there anything you could recommend me?
My friend has been getting me into Faith No More and Marilyn Manson and my sister has got me into Tool, Kyuss, Bad Religion, and NOFX all of which is really depressing. But really I am a hippy music/classic rock sort of guy say Bob Dylan and The Who, Janis Joplin and The Beatles. Those sorts of bands.
Yes, any recommedations?
Well I'm listening to 10 Years - "The Autumn Effect", and I think it's marvelous.

What? :p
and my sister has got me into Tool, NOFX
She seems to have pretty good taste in music.
I have a good one for you, try listening to apocalyptica.
They're an all-cello metal band, almost completely instrumental beautifully done metal. They also did lots of instrumental metallica covers worth listening to.
Enjoy!

All of which I've heard on the radio several times. Admittedly it was on a station that doesn't exist anymore because no one listened to it, but still.

They started off just with cellos but they've got a drummer now. And I heard one of their more recent albums a few days ago and it had guitar on it too. Wasn't as good as Cult.
Oh, although I do disagree that Kyuss are a depressing band. Some songs, maybe, but they have more than enough upbeat trippy songs to counterbalance that. But now, I don't really specialise in happy music (when i'm happy, I usually go for silly or plain weird music), but if you want to put Kyuss in perspective, Electric Wizard are similar in a lot of ways but much, much more bleak in outlook and feel.
If you're interested in trying something a bit more upbeat but also somewhat similar stylistically to Kyuss, there's always Fu Manchu or Monster Magnet.
But, I suppose I can indulge your bizarre need for non-depressing hippie music. You aren't a hippie if you don't listen to the Doors or the Velvet Underground, although neither are always bright and happy. But i'll assume you are already familiar with them.
How about the Pixies, then? They're pretty happy sounding.
(Naturally I second 65daysofstatic too, but not because they're a happy sounding band as such.)

I was speaking specifically then about the bands, I do agree that Kyuss aren't that depressing, I was listening to ...And The Circus Leaves Town and it got a little, heavy? I suppose thats right, but nah, I was more refering to Tool/Faith No More/Marilyn Manson.
Oh course I listen to the Doors, a great band, overrated like heaps of bands but still a great band. I know of Velvet Underground, I just haven't heard anything (that I know of).
I've got a couple of Pixies songs, Monkeys Gone To Heaven and Where Is My Mind and Monkeys Gone To Heaven is pretty upbeat which is kind of the opposite to Where Is My Mind, in my opinion.

Yeah, it certainly is. But what sets it apart from most heavy music is that it's a mellow "heavy" that you can sit back and chill out to. There's no real sense of aggression in it, no fake angst in the music. That's one of the things that makes them special, in my opinion, since that's such an unheard of thing in most heavy music. I'd recommend Welcome to Sky Valley, the album before that one as their best album. (and a contender for my favourite album)
I suppose thats right, but nah, I was more refering to Tool/Faith No More/Marilyn Manson.
I never really found those bands all that depressing, but then I wouldn't say that they're exactly happy music either.
I know of Velvet Underground, I just haven't heard anything (that I know of).
Start off with their first album, The Velvet Underground and Nico (the one with the banana on the cover.). You'll probably like it, but which of their albums is actually the best of their lot is a very individual thing. Their first album is their most recognised "classic", however.
I've got a couple of Pixies songs, Monkeys Gone To Heaven and Where Is My Mind and Monkeys Gone To Heaven is pretty upbeat which is kind of the opposite to Where Is My Mind, in my opinion.
Most of it is pretty upbeat. If you like what you've heard, they'd be well worth checking out more. :)

Upbeat rock/metal? Boy, that's pretty hard to find. I listen to angry ones: Flaw; Five.Bolt.Main; Breaking Benjamin; Seether. If you like gothic metal go try Lacuna Coil.
The voice of the lead of Coheed and Cambria had been compared with Rush, though I haven't heard Rush, just Co&Ca.
Seems to me you want indie rock. Go try the 905 music scene. They've got lots of great bands out there.
Get in touch with a prog-rock band and have them arrange parts of Bartok's Fifth String Quartet. It would redefine awesome.
Interesting Specimens
16-12-2006, 17:29
For some upbeat music... (mostly indie/rock stuff because I don;t really do metal)
Animal Collective - OK so, less upbeat more weird but they're either chilled or crazed, both of which are fun.
Genesis - The EARLY stuff. Anything before 'And Then There Were Three'. It's like Rush but with weirder FX and an epic bent. OK, except the Foxtrot album which sucks for all of side one (side 2 being one HUGE song, 'tis excellent).
OK Go - OK so they are famous now, they weren't once and tey still do good, funky stuff :p (I'm still annoyed I missed them with Motion City Soundtrack in the summer :( )
Five Iron Frenzy - I'm never entirely sure what to make of 'em but they are pretty fun.
Jack Johnson - Acoustic music for those who want to lie back and pretend they're in the tropics without the malaria, the shitty roads and the foreign languages. It's about as far removed from the angst of most metal/rock bands as you can possibly get.
Oh, and Motorhead. 70's metal performed without any shame at all.

I don't think they ever re-did the Fifth String Quartet, but Hungary's very own Panta Rhei (http://www.sdss.jhu.edu/~szalay/music/pantarhei.html) certainly tangled with some of his other pieces.

You know, I've heard Muse was good, but I never really listened to them because my brother liked them, and I tend to subjectively dislike everything he listens to.
Edit: I really like this. Raise the pitch of the voice, and I could see Cedric of the Mars Volta singing this. Not that I'm saying it's real similar to the Volta (not trying to offend other Volta fans :))

Muse are good fun. They're like a modern-day Queen, in a way. Personally I don't think the new album is as good as Origin of Symmetry (not sure they'll ever do an album better than that IMO), but it's still a bloody good listen.

I'm just the same as you (down to isolating myself almost completely from modern music), so here's my reccomendations in that precise field (not complete, just a selection):
Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow and Volunteers are amazing), Santana (Santana, Abraxas), Big Brother & the Holding Company (Cheap Thrills), early Led Zepellin (I, II), Cream (Disraeli Gears, Wheels of Fire), Crosby, Stills, & Nash (Crosby, Stills, & Nash)...
If you're up for downloading, try getting torrents of music from Woodstock, or perhaps you could get the film (which is amazing).
