Cello, or electric guitar?

The electric guitar, simply because you can't play Alex Lifeson's material on a cello.

I'd say cello, as far better music has been written for it.

See my post above, which completely shatters that rather closed-minded statement...

Electric bass xylophone with a distortion pedal.

electric guitar wins by a slight margin. cello gets points for being the subject of a really random song by ladytron.

Well, there is the string quartet tribute to Rush.

Electric,
with enough distortion, you can make it sound like a cello

Considering I know how to, or at least did know how to play the cello, I say cello.

Yeah, but it still pales in comparison to Alex riding the wind with his guitar.

Scratch that. Alex is the wind when he plays.

For how much? Is it an off-brand, a submanufacturer's model (Epiphone), or is it a Gibson?

Pfff. eBay powersellers have Epiphone Les Pauls with chrome humbuckers for just under $300, and many have free shipping with extras.

But just over $400 isn't bad, either. I mean, retail Epiphones cost around $800.

Hmmm, depends. What are we using it for?

Because if we are using it to put me to sleep, cello. If we are using it to make some fun and get drunk, a cello. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about..... getting drunk to a cello.

Hardly closed minded, I never said I disregard all music written for electic guitar, I simply said the music I know written for cello is better in my opinion. It's partly a genre issue, and due to that I prefer the timbre of a cello.

And following the logic from your post, that would mean the piano is better than most other instruments simply because it has music written for it that most other instruments cannot play.
