NS Makeup thread! (the pretty kind)

Well, since the other topic seemed to get a bit side-tracked from ethnicity, I figure there should be a proper venue for beauty tips.

I normally never wear makeup, but last week I went to get new mascara (mine was like, three years old, and though it still seemed fine to me, and hadn't run out [tells you something right there, eh?], I was tired of being admonished by my bacteria-weary and beauty-expert friend) and while I was at the drugstore I got this urge to buy some lipstick {which I have to admit is hot}, and eyeshadow, and new liner too. So now I have a hole in my pocket, and a bunch of makeup I'll probably wear like, once. I don't see why tiny blobs of congealed oil with a bit of colour in them should be so expensive.

Anyway, has someone tried that mascara with the white basecoat and the black (or whatever colour) topcoat!? It looked so enrmous and tempting in the store, but I decided against it, seeing as how I'm sure it must be a gimmick and the two are exactly the same. But then, maybe they aren't.

My friend's mother gave me some for my birthday. I don't usually wear makeup either, and I don't know if it was the product or if I didn't apply it correctly, but it looked like a tarantula was crawling out of my eyeball.

i prefer to buy my makeup at the drugstore or walmart. when you pay $30+ for mascara you keep it way too long. if you pay $3 and find out that its just not your color, you can toss it without a second thought.

if you want better eyelashes than you were born with its probably better to try false eyelashes instead of gunking up the ones you have. its too easy to have that extender mascara stuff clump up.

i saw a model on the today show wearing little sparkles on her upper eyelashes as a holiday look. it was kinda cool.

I seem to remember I was pretty good applier of makeup. For reasons unknown to myself my sister seemed willing to let me apply her makeup for her.

Also, I don't know why, but peole seem to have an inexplicable urge to feminise me. If I drop my attention for 10 seconds (and I've let my hari grow long enough), I find it being platted. I've also had make applied to me on at least several occassions. I think I let it happen because I like the attention. *ahem* There was even this one time when it happened in middle of a police state that has outlawed homosexuality... you should have seen the look I got from a member of staff when she got into the lift with us. Hah!

But a 24k gold eyelash curler wouldnt work that well would it? Gold isnt a very strong metal.
Anyway, that white base with black top coat doesnt look very good, its just like putting on two coats of mascara, it just tends to go lumpy on your eyelashes and look nasty. Try clinique long pretty lashes, its a really good one.

You know, it's interesting. As an adolescent my mother said "You can't wear makeup until you're 16!" And then 16 rolled around and I never really cared about wearing it. Now I'm in my mid-20s and it's starting to bug me that I never learned. Can anyone recommend a good starting point besides those idiotic magazines you find in grocery stores?

you dont have to wear it like a pirate. just dot a bit on the away-from-the-eye side of the lashes all the way from the beginning to the end. even just a bit makes your eyes stand out. (then work up to the pirate level) its sexy on guys.

you could try one of those places in the mall that sell you makeup by giving you a free makeover. they do tend to go overboard in what they put on your face but its not a bad starting point.

makeup is good for those days when you want to look glamorous. all of the beautiful women in magazines, movies, and tv shows look extremely ordinary without makeup. therefore, if done right, you can be as pretty as any movie star.

It could be worse tho, you could be a boy. Internet is also a good place to learn about what makeup goes where.
Anyway, as a start just use a finger and smear concealer over any spots/other red bits, then take mascara and starting right at the base of the lashes run it up the lash. Its always good to wiggle it side to side as you do this as it stops it clumping. Then dust a bit of brown or bronze eyeshadow over your eyelids.
There, easy.

if you have a friend who wears really nice makeup you can ask her to "give you a makeover". people who love makeup tend to love to put it on other people too. she might do a better job than a store since she wouldnt be selling you anything.

Some kinds are pretty awful. If it looks like a spider, than you know you've put on too many coats. I like the maybelling full'n'soft (I know, they allways come up with the msot embarrasing names) because it's not very stiff - ie, you don't feel like you have this carboard spike stuck to your eye. Mascara is more or less the greatest makeup ever.

There, easy.I don't believe in the wiggle, personally. You might want to try some eyeliner too. It takes a bit of practice to do properly but it can be really dramatic. Start with a normal eyeliner pencil, which is good and sharp. You want to apply it as close to you eyelashes as you can, (or sort of *in* your lash line - in short little strokes or dabs. Don't try to do one continuous line because it'll just end up crooked and too thin and inconsistent and awful. for you bottom lid, you can put it inside you lashline (if it doesn't hurt) for a less obvious effect.

If your doing eyeliner for the first time its best to get someone to show you tho, and when your doing the bottom inside lash it tickles a lot till you get used to it.

Makeup is overrated...most women are far more attractive without it than with it.

But meh...the most I know on the subject is the bit of eyeliner I had to wear for a school play...so forget I said anything. :p

Closest thing I'll ever get to makeup (it's too expensive, and as a guy, I really don't need to purchase it) is if I were to grow some of the scratchy stuff on my face. Maybe a chinstrap or something along those lines.

But that requires a lot of patience, and on me, would probably look pretty dumb.

general reply
make-up can be beneficial to whomever has to look at you. if you hate make-up you probably need it. people have used make-up since the first hominid caught their reflection and realized they weren't easy on the eyes and the local cave drunk wouldn't touch them regardless of intoxication.
every living organism has a natural mechanism that deceives the eye and reality... to score. women that try to take a superior high ground arguing make-up is for less enlightened, shallow, or insecure women; should probably take the time spent hating, and slap some lipstick on, make friends with the power, beauty, and feminine goddess within - pure sexuality unconsciously brimming, with strength and vulnerability. make-up or not. until your in a garter, lingerie, some heels, & a little lipstick, with the man or woman you want to want you...and you see the lust, loss of composure, and desire induced by being HER... if you know that moment, and miss the value of tools... forget a partner, buy a vibrator, and enjoy.

is there any such thing as light mascara (that's the stuff for eyelashes, yes?) only all the girls i know that wear mascara end up with the hugest eyelashes ever and i already have long curly eyelashes. if i was to wear makeup i'd only go with that and eyeliner i reckon, but subtly. just cuz i like my eyes but not the rest of my face.

one of my friends got her eyelashes tinted (they're usually white blonde) and they looked perfect, but i can't afford that. plus it's semi permanent and i'd only want it for a night out every now and then.

Mostly people want to darken their lashes so that they stand out more, but you can get brown and lighter colours too. I've got long lashes too - so I don't bother with the ulrua-ultra-extend-thincken-volumize stuff and stick with the basic (and cheaper) versions. Like I said before, I like Maybelline fulln'soft - it seems to work fine.

cool, i shall bear this in mind. most of my female friends seem to all wear heavy makeup although it took me a while to notice, i just thought they had nice skin , i'm generally fairly oblivious though. i only have one male friend who wears makeup and he only wears foundation and mostly only to cover up spots when he has them.

Try number 7 stuff, isnt their entire range supposed to be hypoalergenic? It works for my mum anyway. And if you are alergic to powders, cremes are usually better.
Hey, has anypne tried those eyeshadows from teh bodyshop that come in fours, and are slightly sparkly. You know, the ones that can be used either wet or dry. Great things.

Have you had false eyelashes? I've thought about getting them for my wedding (and honeymoon, since they apparently last up to a month), but I'm a bit antsy about it. I can't stand things being near my eyes unless I'm controlling them, and I know I wouldn't know how to put falsies on myself, especially not the long lasting kind.

The white basecoat eyeliner just gets clumpy and nasty. I use it only for the white and then thin it out with an eyelash comb until I just have nicely defined and brightened eyes. I also use white eyeliner, but blended so only a makeup artist would be able to tell that I'm wearing it.

If you're looking for really excellent makeup I would go with Bare Minerals. I'm primarily a powder freak, though.

Buff, buff, buff, buff, buff, buff...buff some more & go!

I've never seen anybody looking better without a touch of makeup. But I've seen tons of people who got the makeup so wrong they looked like zombies.
So, whatever you do, don't overdo it. Makeup should be seen, not noticed.
