Why do people debate so rudely?

Hydesland

I would say that normally up to 30% of the debates that happen on NSG are rational and calm. The rest of the debates tend to be very agrivated, rude with a lot of attitude even when the person might not feel so passionate about the subject.

I admit, I debate rudely sometimes. Sometimes I may use offensive language and ocasionally attack the poster rather then the post, and if I do attack the post sometimes I would attack it maliciously. Though I don't always feel particularly strong, or offended by the subject at hand.

For instance, I don't really care about Isreal much at all, despite my jewish background. However if someone was to say something that I disagree with strongly about it I would get infuriated with rage and not act calm and sensible....

I need some answers NSG, is there somehting on this thread that causes people to have spontanious rage? NSG rage?

Yep. It's also a lot harder to debate; IRL, I'm a... master debater, because I can use emotion.

because a calm rational reply doesnt get responses. a rude beligerant one does.

so if you want to do more than just post your opinion and move on to the next thread you have to be a bit offensive.

It could be worse.

When you're playing Eve Online, you're flying around in a spaceship, doing things.

If you piss someone off with a comment, they show up with a few friends and blow your ship up. You wake up in a clone bay.

It's way more rude than this place.

Do you need to add "...you idiotic biggoted bastard" to make it noticed?

That, and have a massive postcount. I've noticed that a lot of times, people with low postcounts get ignored even in favor of the regulars around here, even if the noobs make really good points.

some people can deal with it, some can't. probably depends on how open-minded or educated you are....

It is difficult to get one's point across with text only. It can be misunderstood, and lacks the essentials that is carried with a face to face conversation.

thus people get frustrated and that fustration manifests itself as flaming, Rude remarks and even personal attacks.

some people get so passionate about it that when they argue anymore they shout "anti-semite" or "you have no grasp in history". its annoying. looking at history is one thing. how you interperate it is another.

As far as I can see there are basicaly four answers to this question.

1) People are afraid of things and people differant from themselves and so anger has a lot to do with it.

2) People are closed minded and rude about things and people that don't agree with them.

3) People do it on purpose for a laugh(trolling)

4) People like to get under peoples skin in order to see the truth of what they are like.(my personal fave) Responces to Ad homenin attacks really do give you an insight to the kind of person you are dealing with.

I only ever get nasty when people say something really stupid that offends me like "cider is nasty", or when people say things that touches on things in my brain that i dont like to remember.
Im guessing its probably they same for everyone else too.
Either that or im just a pushover.
