What is so good about sliced bread anyway?

I could never figure that out. I mean you could just rip a whole in a laof and fill it with *blank* like a chili bowl. or put the raw meat with the bread and cook it together. did we realy need to slice it?

I hate mushy, dough-like sliced white bread, I prefer the hard crusty type that you have to cut yourself.

Then you need a loaf for everyone

with sliced bread you only need one loaf for many people and all the slices
are fair.

Its like the loaves and fishes, only real

of course we need to slice bread. the standardized loaf and slice size is a hallmark of higher civilization.

It is impossible to make a decent PB&J sammich without sliced bread. How civilized a people are can be measured by the quality of their PB&J sammiches.

Exactly. Sliced bread is just laziness. Folding is the natural way, as in:

http://www.propertiesinparadisevi.com/shared/genericrestaurant/gyro.jpg

or

Much easier, and quicker to bake from nothing. :)

EXACTLY!

you cant just grab a hunk of bread off a loaf and make a decent pb&j. it requires the perfect width of bread and the perfect amount of pb&j.

imagine the days before machine sliced bread.....mama cuts 4 fairly equal slices of bread, slaps some pb&j on them and sets 2 sammiches before her 2 young sons....chaos ensues as the sons fight over who got the better sammich.

*shudder*

how did people live like that?

Not for about an hour, no...

If you've got a serrated bread knife it's easy. I don't understand why people buy sliced bread; it's not as tasty and comes in rubbish thin slices.

Unsliced FTW!

Yeah, what's the deal? Do people not own breadknives? Is it too much work for them?

Proper bread is so ridiculously much nicer.

i tend to be sub-human in my manual dexterity in the mornings to the point where it's all i can do to take two slices out of the bag and put them in the toaster. plus sliced bread stays 'fresh' longer because of all the shit they put in it, and you can freeze it to make it last longer without affecting the taste that much.

having said that, it does taste like cardboard and i do buy unsliced bread as often as i can, but my local supermarket only sells unsliced loaves that go stale after a day and taste shitty anyway. i wish i still lived near tesco, their fresh multigrain loaves were great. scotmid bakery sucks balls.

I buy sliced, not because of the taste, and not because it lasts longer, but for the simple reason thats its much much much cheaper than freshly baked stuff.

this is why god invented bread machines.

for the same price as the pre-sliced crappy whitebread in the store you can have fresh baked bread every morning.

the only downside is that it reduces your diet to bread and butter because its so yummy.

I think Saxnot means the heel of the loaf, the bit on the end. Keeping that would help keep the bread fresh.

We keep our bread in the freezer, the store-bought stuff, anyway, because we use that mainly for toast. When I make bread we just put a bit of foil on the cut end. If you wrap the whole loaf the crust gets uncrusty. And bread machines are teh ebil! A loaf of bread is not supposed to look like that! Get in there and knead it, shape it, get your hands sticky and floury! :p

We often bake our own or buy fresh baked loaves and slice them ourselves anyway.

Its hard to buy real whole wheat or whole grain sliced bread that doesnt have high fructose corn syrup in it.

So-sliced bread isnt high on my list of "greatest things".

It would make more sense to me if people said-"Thats the greatest thing since indoor plumbing" or even "toilet paper".

I see those as advances that greatly improved the quality of life-just off the top of my head.

Some people do. Presumably because they don't want curly hair.

It seems to keep better if when you cut the end off ("crust") you don't use it straight away, but put it back on the end of the loaf when you've cut off what you want. To cover the cut end up. That might be what he means.

I guess sliced bread was considered a major advance in household convenience. Instead of Mother having to bake bread every couple of days, she could buy it, nice and white, in the store, already sliced. I agree that indoor plumbing is certainly a bigger advance, but sliced bread must have seemed awesome in its day.

oh phew. that makes much better sense.

ya ya its "better" if you make it by hand. ya ya bread machine loaves are oddly shaped (some are better than others though) BUT who makes bread by hand every day (or every week)? if the good stuff in the store is too expensive and you are too busy to make it yourself on a regular basis, you can have fresh bread every day or every other day with a bread machine. you can have it freshly baked when you get up in the morning or when you get home from work. now thats something you cant have when you make it yourself.

i think it might only be scotmid's (co-op) bread. i didn't have that problem when i lived near a tesco. i don't know what they do with their 'fresh baked' stuff but it's just shit. it's rock hard before you've got half way through the loaf and doesn't taste much better than your bog standard sliced loaf.

I was kidding. Here's a link to a recipe for no-knead bread (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html?ex=1166245200&en=46e5ca7c107a380a&ei=5070) that was in the New York Times Magazine recently. i make a no-knead bread from a family recipe. its not like that one from the times but it does require letting it rise over night. those breads are very yeasty. some people hate that smell of yeasty bread but to me its the smell of home made bread. AND its politics-free.

I love the smell of rising and then of baking bread, too. And yeah, politics does dwindle in importance before a slice of warm, fresh bread. Aaagghh, I have to be here another seven hours! I want to go home and bake bread!

I have the perfect solution. I live right next to a bakery. So I can get freshly baked bread everyday... I don't though... mainyl because it takes me about a week to get through a small loaf. I can get all sorts of breads. I generally just get his granary bread though. And on top of all that he has a bread slicing machine (it only does medium slice - but that's fine by me). So I live a perfect world. Real, freshly baked sliced bread.

I sometimes get eccles cakes, doughnuts, tarts or muffins too. A very sickly sweet way to start the day.

Sounds marvelous. Once upon a time, long ago, I lived in a rat-hole flat in New York City and the only redeeming quality it had was being across the street from a bakery. The scent of that baking bread in the mornings was wonderful!

I should be huffy that you even suggest store-bought. Home-made, Granny Smiths and Cripps Pinks, open top (I have this thing that you put under the top crust and press the dough down, it cuts it into a lattice of clevere oak leaves, very stylish).

these days people dont even know what baked goods should taste like. they have been fooled into thinking that the mass market versions are good.

i gave my sister a ration of shit at thanksgiving because she made everything from scratch but thought that a mrs smiths frozen apple pie was good enough.
