I must say I'm impressed! I never thought someone could go that fast on actual roads. Though traffic at that hour was probably pretty thin.

Most impressive.
I wonder what car he was driving...
Subaru Impreza. Which was not on my list of suspect vehicles when I heard about it. I figured Viper or Vette. Does beg the question of who'd give a teenager that kind of horsepower.
In a subaru none the less!
Another reason to be proud to be an American!

At that speed and one misstep, and he would've been proud to be american chop suey. :p
Roads in that area are not particularly good, though I wasn't on 30 my last trip. Several of them I had to hold on with both hands while doing the speed limit. There were so many holes and patches my pick-up was literally shaking so hard it kept drifting right.

Wow, did he not think that if he smashed the car up his parents would be even more mad at him?
Can kids drive at 16 all through America, or just in certain states? Over here they want to increase it to 18 because... well because of things like this.

It depends on the state for liscense and permit. Here in NJ, permit at 16 and liscense at 17.

Good thing for him he was smarter than Victor Harris (Scott v. Harris) and actually pulled over when he was caught.

227 kph, that's not bad. The fastest I've managed in an open road is 210kph, then I started to get nervous and throttled back to 180.

Well uh... I've done 60 with my Z!!
Loser. I've done 105(mph) in my Z.
If he had a Delorean with a Flux Capacitor, he could have just time-traveled his way home.
Fastest I've ever done on a public road is 115mph in a small hatchback, with a tailwind. Still had maybe another 5mph in it, but ran out of space.

Am I the only one that noticed this little fact?
Deputy John Brubaker didn't arrest the teen, who had a valid Colorado license, but told him to drive straight home and call him within an hour. The boy's mother called instead, and Brubaker told her what happened.
You are doing 142 mph and you don't get arrested?
The article does mention a charge of speeding.
I know where I live it is $5 per mile per hour over the limit for the first 10 mph over and $10 per for every mph over that.
The fine for this little stunt would come out around $1600!

In my state (north dakota) you can get your license at 14. However i didn't get mine until 15

Wait a second...Colorado license...2004 Subaru Impala...no way; it can't be Nathan...but then he WOULD do something like this...and he is visiting in Indiana right where this occurred...
US 30 in that area has varying degrees of traffic. The Valpo stretch of that road can describe 10-15 miles of the road. If he was east of Strongbow Inn and the IN-49 Bypass, then there was likely little traffic. If he was West of it, the traffic tends to pick up as you go through past the Wal Mart, Wise Way, and a few large shopping centers. It dies down a little, but really gets heavy near Merillville
I used to live in good ole Valpo so I know this are very well. My grandma still lives there and I will actually be driving along that stretch of 30 on Friday on my way back from Purdue.
I'm not at liberty to discuss how fast I've driven my Saab on US-30 (I did it when going from Valpo to Plymouth)

This is America, we don't use kilometers here.
Anyway..... 140 in a 50 mph zone..... Pretty harsh parents, eh?

Its an Impreza, not an Impala.

Best. Excuse. Ever.
this story was in the US.
And? Whichever method of distance over time you use to represent it won't change the actual physical speed he was travelling. What, am I supposed to use miles out of respect for Americans in all instances when referring to the US now? That's dumb. :p

fastest i've gone on a multilane road (M9 from edinburgh) was 110mph in a twin turbo MR2 (old model) that i was supposed to be delivering to a customer in Alloa.
on a normal B-road though i've done 85mph in jersey on a quiet stretch, that was in an unmodified '96 vw polo with a kayak-rack and strong crosswinds and an uneven cambre, pretty stupid really. probably be easier to go faster in the UK if there was less traffic and no cameras.

I've managed 119mph on the M1 in a Toyota Yaris packed with 5 people and their camping gear...

We managed to get 110mph out of a 16 person minibus with full roofrack. There's a downhill run on the M74 in Dumfries and Galloway, twas scary as hell.

heh, i'm not surprised! i started to get nervous approaching 110 cuz the car wasn't mine and if i'd got caught speeding i'd have been in a shitload of trouble with the boss. plus i didn't really know where i was going and i didn't want to miss the exit as i was running late.
when you hit 85 in jersey you begin to realise why the island speed limit is 40mph. 60 is about the fastest you can go as a regular speed without feeling you're going to fall off cuz the roads are so narrow and twisty. and that's only if you don't think about all the blind junctions and corners there are. UK drivers tend to drive at a steady 25 in jersey cuz the roads seem to make them so nervous.

My top speed was 205 km/h in my Peugeot 306, on the open limit roads of the Northern Territory.

I've done 130 mph in my Ford Taurus SHO on a road notorious for having a really bumpy stretch, making me saw back and forth because of all the bumpsteer.
oh, and a Subaru can go much faster than that.
