everything I've heard of him suggests he was a kind, soft spoken, intelligent man. His CHARACTER may have been an asshole but...well...he was an actor.

Why was he an asshole?

He was part of a movie called F.T.A. (Fuck the Army).

I support free speech as much as the next guy, but smearing the military was, IMO, utterly despicable and tasteless. The soldiers don't make foreign policy or decide who, what, where, when, and why they fight. Blame the politicians, not the people coerced into fighting for them.

well by all rights America shouldn't actually have an army so you can't call him unpatriotic

And why would his views on the army affect your view of him?

IMDB doesn't list him as taking any role in such a movie. In addition he was, in fact, in the army, and i do think serving gives one the right to critique.

You can oppose a war without denigrating the troops.

And I know several people who fought in that war (many who were dead-set against it). I think it's stupid how assholes like him targeted the military and not the culprits really responsible, i.e. the politicians.

I looked it up. The movie didn't smear the soldiers, it smeared the idiocy of some of the brass and the war itself. It looks pretty sympathetic to the soldiers themselves; in fact, one reviewer called it "too sweet".

From your source
"This is the story of a group of actors and actresses who toured around the world playing near US military bases with a show called FTA for "Free" The Army"
Arthais101

ahh here, we go:

FTA (Fuck the Army or Fun, Travel, Adventure) served as a USO for troops that did not require strict adherence to the President Nixon's continuation of the Vietnam War. In addition to Jane Fonda, participants in FTA included Dick Gregory, Donald Sutherland, Ben Vereen, Peter Boyle, Ossie Davis, Holly Near, and Nina Simone. FTA was supported by the United States Serviceman Fund (USSF). From its founding in 1969, USSF supported the real needs of GI's by funding coffee houses, GI newspapers, military counseling, and legal support. Among sponsors and supporters of USSF were Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, Noam Chomsky, Betty Friedan, Nat Hentoff, and several unions and their locals. Another project supported by USSF organized military wives and families (Moser, 91-93).

That doesn't sound very critical of the soldiers at all. In fact, technically, there's a HUGE difference between "soldier" and "army". Were one to attack the people themselves "fuck the soldiers" is more proper". "Fuck the army" is an assault on the beaurocracy of the entity that is the army, not the soldiers who fill it.

Exactly, in fact, one review I found said:

Viewing "FTA" today is like opening a long-forgotten time capsule. The
film's true power comes in the frank, often rude comments from the servicemen
and women who openly question the purpose and planning of the American
involvement in Vietnam. Most memorable here are the members of the U.S.S.
Coral Sea, who presented a petition to their superiors demanding a halt to
the bombing in Vietnam; African-American soldiers and marines who angrily
decried racist attitudes among the white commanding officers at the U.S.
military installations, usually with an upraised fist of the Black Power
movement; women serving in the U.S. Air Force who talk unhappily about sexual
harassment from their male counterparts; and soldiers who pointedly refer to
the dictatorial government in South Vietnam which was being presented as the
democracy which they were supposedly defending. The extraordinary air of
dissent that rises out of "FTA" provides a rare glimpse into a unhappy and
demoralized fighting force stuck in a war which they did not believe in.

So, no, Congo, I don't think Peter Boyle was an asshole.

Some of them didn't care for the idea of a standing army, but yeah, it's legal.

I was late responding to his telegram too. I never check them.. cause I never get any lol. It was just chance that I decided to look at my nation (I usually dismiss issues, but did answer 4 a couple days ago, so decided to see what it did-- and btw I see the majority of my nation is nihilist- wth did I choose to get that) and saw the telegram. He probably didn't even catch my reply. No biggie tho.

edit: and damn! I just opened this 24 oz. beer and my big cup is empty .. probably a good time for me to log out. =)
