This exists in Germany as well, that letters to the 'Weihnachtsmann' or the 'Christkind' are replied to and the weirdest letters arrive...

I kinda always knew there was no Santa Claus, but I think that was the fault of the german culture and its unability to decide wether Santa comes or the "Christkind"...I still liked Christmas at that time very much!

because not lieing to children somehow prevents them from having a childhood. Amazingly, I'm pretty sure Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Voudouns, Wiccans, Pagans, Atheists, et. al. all have childhoods without Santa.

The Irish post office does this too. You send a letter with something along the lines of "Santa Claus, The North Pole" and they'll send a letter back from Santa. Last time I got one it included what I asked for.

I have no idea what your point is in posting this thread, but this cracked me up:

Gaborik still marvels at a missive that arrived three years with a Michigan postmark and no postage stamp. It was addressed to Santa Claus and had no return address. Inside was a thousand-dollar money order and an anonymous note that said: “If you are who you say you are, you’ll put this to good use.” :p

Are you saying it gave you something you wanted? As in, it gave you a lifetime subscription to Penthouse?

a "childhood" does not necessarily have to consist of raising delusional idiots. when I was in the neighborhood of 4 I asked my mother to confirm my strong suspicion that santa did not exist, and she did. my dad then told me there was no tooth fairy or easter bunny, to which I fealt like replying "no shit, sherlock"...or at least I would have had my vocabulary included that phrase.

actually, pagans have childhoods with santa! in pennsylvania the pennsylvania dutch still have christmas stories about Knecht Ruprecht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knecht_Ruprecht)...who is definately not very christian looking. my piano teacher, a sweet woman and rather a puritanical one, will not decorate for christmas with anything but snow-men, as she insists (I suspect correctly) that pretty much every part of christmas is pagan in some form.

Well since pagan seems to fall in the category of non-christians then Odin is technically Santa Claus.
