That it rattles my windows and literally makes my heart skip beats? In your car? How can you even enjoy it that loud?

well, if there was a way to make windows not rattle with loud music, id be all ears to that solution.

in any other case, its just up to the listener. its fun to listen to music loud sometimes.

You silly, twisted little boy. Decibels are good for you.

Anyway, it's a matter of taste. Some people have definitions of loud far differant from our own. Some people might have hearing so slightly defective that it isn't treated or noticed: I have the same thing with my sense of smell. And it's way easier to be stirring when you have volume to play with.

I can see where you're coming from, but damn, does loud music have to be so loud it wakes me up as you're driving by? The only other sound is the rattling of the car falling apart.

But to each his own, I guess they could very well ask why I spent so much money on my computer.

I was just expressing some frustration.

I absolutely hate that too! I was driving and pulled up to a yellow Hummer at a red light and I swear you could see the metal rattling like crazy, the windows just vibrating out of control. My own car was even rattling... I was just in disbelief the entire time until the light turned green and I floored it because I was not gonna be stuck behind or on the side of this damn land barge any longer.

Same thing with cars passing by my house at night; I have been woken up at 3am by a passing car playing music. It's ludicrous.

It's Just another part of "boy racer" culture, the bigger your speakers the bigger your penis. It's done simply to make people look at the car and the person driving it. Peacock Feathers if you will, though badly displaced ones I agree. I have long dreamed of making an em-pulse weapon that operates at a frequency capable of blowing car stereo's. Sadly though I don't think it's possible and if it were possible it's probably not going to be portable because of the size of the arial and powersupply you'd need. :(

Your ideas intrigue me. Perhaps we could just make grenades that fill the car with non-lethal foam? It might muffle the sound, and as an added benefit, suffocate the driver.

music loud in the home is one thing and up to the individual. but stupidly loud music booming out of cars or in pubs is just irritating.... especially in pubs when you can't talk or think because of the stupid music

Agreed. Sometimes it's so bad I just turn off my radio. The man next to me is so keen on sharing his music it'd be rude to not do so.

It's not so much that I dislike loud music because it is loud...rather the situation that it occurs in.

If I'm studying, or working in general, I don't want to hear loud music from someone's headphones, while they're wearing them. It's just loud enough so you can here some of the beat, but it's fuzzy, and EXTREMELY annoying. "Muzzak" I think it's called.

The chump driving down the street blaring 50 Cent at 11...more annoyed at the music choice. It's kind of obnoxious, but since I don't sit next to another person in a car for more than a minute, I don't worry.

In all honesty, I'm more worried about hearing damage rather than how annoying it is. I swear, this next generation of kids is going to grow up deaf from listening to their MP3s at 80db, with back problems due to heavy packs, and extremely bitter due to a heavy school load.

Nope. You got to hit 85 db(A) before any hearing damage can possibly occur in any given healthy ear, and even at that level you could listen 8 hours every single day without any noticeable decline.

I've always felt that excessive loudness in music is just a cover for its crappiness. I listen to music for both the intellectual and emotional experience, not for thumping basslines.

Given your love for the classical tradition it is a good thing that an orchestra doesn't produce over 110dB at times. Or that brass sections can't hit 140dB.

Oh wait. Must just be a cover for its crappiness then.

I said excessive loudness, not loudness in general. There are times when it's appropriate. However, endless fortissimo on full blast does strike me as rather excessive.

Some music is meant to be loud, if you happen to find yourself listening to "The Hall of the Mountain King" or early Screeching Weasel, and you aren't in at least a little bit of physical pain, then your volume is down far too low.

Otherwise, Bars and restaurants often turn the music up real loud to prevent eaves dropping when there are several tables shoved close together, each with its own personal conversations.

Try putting some decent sound deadening material behind on the inside of the door panels. Specifically behind the speakers but ideally all over. Beyond that, buy a car that doesn't have loose windows. :D

Excessive? That's downright detrimental to your health, and not just your hearing.

But the real purpose of those huge, window-rattling stereos in cars is a mating display. Those guys are saying, "Hey, baby, if you think this loud music is cool, wait 'til you see my dick. It's so big that Steven Spielberg returns its calls."

...or put notch filters into the equation so as to cut those resonant frequencies at which the windows or bodywork are prone to rattle first.

Considered okay for 15 minutes daily exposure by the US and EU authorities. Personally I would have earplugs in before things get to that level though.

Fun fact: dumping glass into bottle banks can hit peaks of 122dB.

Your physics teacher is an idiot. .

I think that's a little harsh.

A car does indeed act as a soundbox. If you experiment with the front windows and find the optimal amount of 'openess' the gap will act in the same way as the ports in house speakers, producing sine waves the size of houses which will carry for miles. I think that's what the physics teacher was getting at.

As a general rule though, the louder it sounds outside the car, the worse it sounds inside. Painting your car bright pink and writing 'I CRAVE ATTENTION!' on the bonnet would be a bit tragic though, wouldn't it.

It depends on the song. If there's a really rockin' song that's got my endorfin and adrenaline levels up, I can't turn it loud enough.

I don't get the appeal of the massive bass though, then again, I don't get the appeal of country or pop either.

I wonder if it shakes a car's components loose.

That's a good idea.

I read that the human ear magnifies sounds 20 times in passing them from the outer to the inner ear, so if you think it's loud around you, it's hammering the living daylights out of your inner ear.

The music these guys play seems to be made up almost entirely of those resonant frequancies, though. And anyone that knows what a notch filter is ought to already understand the importance of deadening material in an in-car system and, therefore, used it.

It can get loud enough for treble distortion to occur in the ear and all that happens is that it feels... uncomfortable.

The ones that ride around blaring their systems like that aren't doing it for themselves.. they are playing it that loud so everyone else knows what they are listening to. When I was younger I listened to music pretty loud.. and yeah wanted everyone to hear what I was playing ...never had a system in my car that had enough bass to mess up my heart rythmn tho, but I've sat in some that did. Now I listen to it at a pleasent level for myself only where it's just clear and not a nuisance to others. And when I pull somewhere like a gas station, I turn it down. Plus my ears just can't handle it anymore.

Yeah, well it is tha fact that soundsystem is putting out sufficient energy to make those frequencies resonate that makes them more prominent due to the fact that they are resonating sympathetically which explains that.
