Guys,

Help I was looking around on ytmnd at vader parodies when I stumbled across one with bush and a sniper crosshair on his head. I immidiatly got out of it because I remember that lefty myspace chick who got in trouble with the CIA for posting her stabbing bush or something. What should I do? Do they still snoop even?

OMG How the hell was I suppposed to know that the toon had bush in it, the site offers misleading descriptions of the toons sometimes and the titles sometimes have nothing to do with the content, and I thought the site was safe because if making toons with violence against bush is a federal offense all of them would have been deleted.

Please answer my questions, do they still snoop? And what the hell's going to happen next?

the Chick didn't get into trouble with the Myspace account but a Website she inherited from someone else. so it could be that they were looking for/at the original owner of the site.

and yes, The Gov does go out to the internet. anything they find suspicious will be investigated. Same with the Police, your parents etc...

just be smart, (viewing something on Youtube or ytmnd won't raise flags.) and also be responsible.

You're not going to get into trouble for seeing a cartoon of Bush with a sniper crosshair on his head. If you were to claim that you wanted to kill him you may (and I'd think it'd be unlikely unless you were to claim it a lot) be talked to, but you're certainly not going to get into trouble for looking at a dumb cartoon.

too much, you've now been labeled as a "Redneck" and any hate crime in your surrounding area out to 100 miles radius will now be flagged to have you investigated. :p

oh and it's too late, it's been recorded... I suggest you change your name, your looks, heck even your sex.

I'm an Asian, how can I be a redneck, even Asians can hate people and note that that was only targeted at fundy Islamists who strap bombs to their chests and blow up airplanes.

This guy is a US soldier (part of the US government) and being an insider knows what he's talking about, thus I feel safe that as long as I don't threaten to shoot bush and such I'm safe.

Actually, I'm not anymore, I've been a civilian since 2004. Also, soldiers don't know any more about the civilian working of the government than anybody else. Still, as you said you're not going to go to jail unless you start threatening to kill the President, and even then you'd probably just a stern talking to.

We do. I work at the US Department of Justice, and I'm telling you the snoops are all over the place. This is 2nd hand information from cafeteria chat. I work in a different area of speciality.

Looking at paraody cartoons wouldn't be a problem, they have far too much data to sort through with human oversight. If there are specifics mentioned, it might warrant closer attentions (which may be anything from a quick interview to Gitmo).

This is what some in the US have been reduced to? Fearing the government for just watching something?

So sad.

It's the great post-millennial irony - the US turning into 18th century Britain. Kinda makes that whole revolution skirmish not seem all too important...

It would be ironic if Britain discovered all these technologies but then lost them all and forgotten them after the Revolutionairy war :p LOLs

No, but it had spies and censors and a government one needed to fear should it be apprised of one's reading things they didn't like...

But the dynamic is very interesting!

He was scared of the govm't...yet (according to a quote of a now-deleted post) he wanted to go join an army and blast the ones the govm't says to hate. Rather than the anti-Bush jibes I would have expected.

It's a psychological phenomenon that strikes me as worth checking out more; there's probably even a name for it and studies on that type of reaction.

But then, when there is a concern about surveillance, sometimes the real opinion isn't posted. So who knows.

The bigger irony is that we do it claiming it's to protect our freedoms.

The internet is like a giant garbage bag. Most of it is bad pornography and business. There are mountains of crap. Most of what you say means absolutely nothing to the government and even if it did, the government would be able to sift through a small amount of it. Start talking about specific things and you become a target. Otherwise nothing happens.

In any recordable medium you have to watch what you say. There is absolutely no true privacy on a phone in a subway station, etc. Everything is recorded these day in public places to prevent crime. In the mountains of information, the government is looking for red flags, obvious stupid things which mark you-- breaking a window, scrawling graffiti, etc. This is what "broken windows" is about for policing, I think the same things applies to dissident opinions and thoughts.

You break the windows in the game of political correctness you become a target. With this kind of thinking, it is encouraged, the government doesn't really have to monitor you that much. Someone will scream about an uncorrect statement, it could be you insulted Santa Claus, or you said something wrong about a minority, or even started talking about opinions on terrorism... you get a big target...

Recordable mediums are not private. Privacy is not even in ones home, it is in the wilderness on boat trips and similar things. Public spaces next to private spaces can be used to monitor what goes on inside ones home, as long as the government or whoever wants to watch your home is not inside the home they can photograph, record, and do a lot of things.

Remember it is not the government that wants to monitor you these days, it is the godawful corporations that want to find out if your credit is correct, if you take drugs, whether you will buy something which they have to sell you. A lot of private concerns are more intrusive than the government ever will be.

Don't break windows, watch your political correctness, keep your credit score clean, and find some time for truly private places and you will be alright.

If you listen to this then you are truly confused.

I wouldn't worry about it. Think of the resources and the manpower necessary to track down every person who looked at a cartoon.
