This is the result of watching Read or Die too many times and getting addicted off of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Haha. Take the test, I command it.

Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886)
Hungarian born composer, Liszt was an incomparable pianist. He performed the piano at numerous concerts, and was famous for making the women wild, which coined the word "Lisztomania." Liszt composed some of the most difficult piano music, and invented the symphonic poem for orchestral work that didn't conform to traditional strict symphonic format. Liszt lived until the age of 74, and died of pneumonia.

Franz Schubert (Vienna 1797 - Vienna 1828)
Schubert was singing in a choir as a boy, but later quit to help his father out as a teacher. He grew tired of the classroom, and decided to become an independent composer. He since lived in poverty. An introvert, he only had few true friends who helped him out financially. Schubert was most famous for his "songs" and he established the German Lied as a new form of art. The disease that caused his death at age 32 is still the subject of debate. Some think he died of syphillis, some suggest he died of typhoid fever.

Five responses? Only five possible composers? Talk about a limited quiz.

None of the above.

My composer alter-ego would be Hector Berlioz. Brilliant musician without being able to play any instrument well. Obsessive, especially about his idee fixe -- love of his life. Wrote for unusual instrument combinations and was progrssively Romantic while looking back to older forms for inspiration.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salzburg 1756 - 1792)
A musical prodigy as a child, Mozart began composing at age six. His talent took him across Europe where he performed in front of royalty. In his teenage years, Mozart was fired by his commissioner, the Archbishop of Salzburg, and he decided to become a freelance composer. Mozart and his wife were both spendthrifts, which caused them both financial problems. Mozart died in poverty at age 35 and was buried in a common cemetary. His gravesite is unknown to this day.

Obscene little man. "Amadeus" is one of my favorite movies. :D

Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)
Growing up, Beethoven endured mental/physical abuse by his demanding and alcoholic father who pushed him to become a musician in order to augment the family income. In 1795, Beethoven became publicly known as a rising and brilliant composer. But in 1801, his confidence began to disappear as his hearing slowly deteriorated, and in 1818 became completely deaf. He sank into depression and paranoia, and was viewed as an eccentric by others. Though musical tastes had changed in the 19th century (people then preferred light rossini operas), Beethoven's genius as a composer was still known and respected. Beethoven died in early 1827 during a thunderstorm. Sources say that Beethoven rose up and lifted his right fist as thunder lighted his room, and soon after, sank into eternal sleep. His funeral was attended by around 30,000 people.
