Console Madness
By Jason Cross

As I walk to work through the financial district of San Francisco every day, I always causally glance at the various newspaper vending machines to see what the headlines are. It's not often I do a double-take (that just goes with my increasing jaded attitude toward news) but the other day…the other day USA Today featured a front-page banner that read "PS3 vs. Wii." This is USA Today material now? I guess so. I guess there can be no more argument about whether or not gaming has "arrived" as fully mainstream entertainment when USA Today is writing front-page preview fodder about the impending console wars. And hey, where's the Xbox 360? It's just as next-gen as the others…but it shipped on time, a year ago.

I expect some socks (Argyle), maybe some calligraphy stuff, ink and such like, and if I'm really good, a bunch of books. What is this "game console" you lament so? :p

You can still wrap fish in it, so I guess so.

I don't think it's a contest. According to MSN, Wii pwns. ;)

from http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/061208markets.aspx?GT1=8886

"PS3 bows to Wii
It looks like Sony's (SNE, news, msgs) PlayStation 3, which was introduced in the United States on Nov. 17 and caused a furor among frenzied fans, is not the hot seller the company had hoped for.

Sony said only 197,000 units of the PS3 had been sold since the launch date, far fewer than the company's 400,000 target.

Perhaps the trouble is the competition: Nintendo's (NTDOY, news, msgs) Wii, which debuted two days later, has sold 476,000 units so far.

Sony said its earlier PlayStation 2 was selling well, with 663,000 units sold.

Is price a problem? Maybe. The Wii costs about $250, while the PS3 costs between $499 and $599.

Investors shrugged off the PlayStation disappointment, boosting the stock 0.5% to $40.10. Nintendo was unchanged but has climbed 20.7% in the last three months. Microsoft (MSFT, news, msgs) is also in the market with its Xbox 360, which sold 511,000 units in November. The Xbox 360 came out a year ago. (Microsoft is the publisher of MSN Money.) Microsoft was up 1.9% to $29.40.

And screw the XBox 360 and, unless the price changes, the PS3; I'll just get a Wii or save room for SPORE

To answer the question in the poll... NONE.
if there is a game console under the tree for me, then I would've bought it, and if I bought it, it wouldn't be wrapped up under the tree. It would be plugged in over my PS2!

You know, I've been watching this poll very closely over the last hour. And even though I may be completely mistaken, I get the sense that someone who has multiple accounts has voted on this poll about 4 times and each time selected all the options. Well, if someone is doing this, know that I am on to you. :p

huh? are they saying that there are ps3 languishing on store shelves somewhere unsold and unwanted? that kinda makes those people paying thousands for them on ebay a bit stupid doesnt it?

i was under the impression that every ps3 and wii that has been put on store shelves have been sold. am i wrong?

msn is owned by microsoft who makes xbox 360 and whose bigger competitor is sony who makes the PS3. they have a stake in making the ps3 look like a loser.

I'm a Nintendo fan simply because they create games which you can just plug in and play for fun.

No, it's a supply and demand issue. The PS3s are selling out so fast that you can hardly find one anywhere and Sony can't seem to keep up with the demand. Some people are even camping outside the stores for days just to make sure they get one; or perhaps like you said, buying them on eBay for thousands of $$$.

Gaming PC all the way!!! Can't imagine being able to play with all the settings maxed and still have high fps.. being able to raid and still move and view smoothly. Would be awesome! One day.. one day. My little pc does pretty good tho. Glad I have it.

As for the consoles.. hmm not sure really, but I guess I'd want to try out the Wii.

Most of the people I play with that have real good ones, are white box pc's..not name brand but were put together themselves. Name brand gaming specd pc's cost a lot. When I upgrade I will probably do a white box.

Cyberpower actually makes some great bare-bones, white box style PCs. I got mine from them on a whim, and it runs beautifully. They cost far less than bigger name manufacturers, too.

But to answer the question, I'd want the Wii. But that's only because I have a gaming PC already. Wii FTW indeed. The PS3 has nothing new, and the Xbox 360 is banking on its fanboys to back it up. The Wii is the only one to offer something new (and actually have some good launch titles, from what I've heard). Just like Nintendo had its fall from grace when the original Playstation came out, now the PS3 has had its own with the release of the Wii, for much the same reason: A lack of innovation.

Wait...

Sony were hoping to shift 400,000 units. 197,000 have been sold. And yet, the PS3 is "selling out so fast you can hardly find on anywhere"...

If that's all true, then Sony seriously fucked something up in the supply chain.

pcspecialist.co.uk do good ones too, got mine from there and not had any trouble. at least not with the bits they put in.

Probably gonna get a Wii, maybe a 360. not a PS3 unless in a years time theyre a sensible price and it turns out I do want a blu ray player after all. HDDVD looks a bettter bet but who knows what will happen. I dont know why anyone would want either at the moment, no goddamn discs to put in them.

Having a gaming PC rules.

There is indeed. At this stage, demand outstrips supply for both Wii and PS3 (and from what I can see the Wii is gonna be that way for a while, lots of 'non-gamers' want in it seems). Nintendo have, by choosing cheap and easy components for the main box ensured they can keep shovelling Wii's onto the market fast, Sony have far more trouble doing the same because of their expensive internals.

Both of them are gonna sell like hotcakes for a while yet.

When I get a gaming PC it'll either be a homebuilt machine or, if I somehow land a dream job I'll get a Falcon Northwest Mach V (because nothing screams "Killer PC" like a custom paint-job :p)

Personal Computer.

PC ftw...

and Wii pwnz, I played it and it rocks! Not as good as my pc though ;)

But to answer the question, I'd want the Wii. But that's only because I have a gaming PC already. Wii FTW indeed..Indeed he speaks the truth. Wii is great (I should know, I played it). And it's just... fun. What games are supposed to be...
