Christmas cards/letters for or against?

So, I was addressing Christmas cards, and contemplating next year and possibly sending out one of those Christmas newsletter thingys that we keep getting.

So, NSG, do you send out Christmas cards? Do you like getting them? What do you think about Christmas letters?

My Christmas card this year is a card with a place in the front to put a 3X5 photo, and so not only do they get a nice little card but a pic of us, I think they are neat.

consensus?

I don't like christmas cards, I regard them as an awful waste of money and material. If I like someone, they'll get a little present. If I don't, why burden the environment with more garbage in the form of cards?

I like Christmas cards, sending and getting. We get very few, though because we send very few (if any). The reason we don't send cards is that Herself insists on writing a mini-Christmas letter in each one and immediately develops writer's block. I myself would just sign our names, stick the card in an envelope, etc, and send it. But I'm not in charge.

We did a Christmas letter only once, I think. Didn't talk to each other for two days ... no, but it was a lot of fussing about what should be in it, which I found bothersome.

I send cards out to clients, which went out end of November, it's a business thing.

These I send out to family that is far enough away that I don't see them but close enough that they deserve to hear from us.......and they get a pic, so they are happy.

No letters--just cards. But I'll tell you what bugs me--virtual cards of any kind. At least with an actual card, the sender had to go to the effort of finding an address and a stamp. A virtual card says to me, "I didn't care enough to do any real work, so here's an irritating last second email instead."

Cards are a waste. A nice letter would be nice. I don't go into the whole card thing. I loathe receiving them and I refuse to send them.

I like christmas cards, within reason. As the years go by, the number of people you send christmas cards to seems to grow and grow until one day, you don't send cards becuse they matter, but because you're expecting them from certain people and you don't want to break the chain. :p

I saw it happen to my mom and my sister, and I see it happening to my wife, despite all my warnings. We send out way too many cards. They're losing their meaning. *sigh*

If I ever end up living in the US, this is one custom I am certain to NOT acquire. :p

I can hardly force myself to reply to normal emails during the year, and it would depress me endlessly to sit in front of a blank sheet of paper come December and try to list "my accomplishments" or even just "what happened this year". What if nothing happened and I certainly didn't accomplish anything? And don't even start with the picture taking....

This is true, we now have a spreadsheet on Excel with everybody to send newsletter or card or present, depending on who they are. So much for the personal touch.

And a real card says to me "I didn't care enough to spend any real money on a gift, so here's an irritating bit of two-dollar cardboard I grabbed while buying beer and Butterfingers at Duane Reade."

I don't do cards, because I've seen what Christmas cards did to my parents. Sure, it always starts out small, a dozen or so sent out to close family and friends. Then you start getting cards from people to whom you didn't send anything, and so you feel obligated to send them a card next year, since you've already started sending cards out anyway.
But it doesn't stop there does it? No, because then you get a "career", and you've got to send cards to all your coworkers, because suddenly it matters if everyone at work hates you or not. Before you know it, you're buying those huge boxes of 500 cards and devoting entire weekends just to licking envelopes and stamps.
Finally, when the carpal tunnel syndrome has set in and you can't even move your hand enough to masturbate as a distraction from the boredom, the wolves come down.

Whilst I`m not sure about how this works in the US, an annual "newsletter" type thing in England screams "look at us! We`re better than you! This is what my `honour student` children did this year which somehow, simply by us sending out a primly printed newsletter, puts all of your and your spawn`s efforts to shame. Yah boo sucks to be you." Which doesn`t mean to say that they aren`t sent, my family recieves a fair few each year.

Don`t slip to the dark side, Smunkee! :(

When i get my Christmas card i put them on the wall with tape and take them down after Christmas, some times i hope i get some money but mostly i get a note saying to believe in god or your a sinner.

I don't seed cards out mostly because i have no time to and its pointless.

My family sends out cards to around 50-60 people every year, and we recieve around the same amount every year as well. I love getting Christmas cards, I assign each card ratings when we get them, so every year, someone will get the award for "best card". I also tape up all of the cards that we get to the wall which makes a nice decoration for the holidays.

edit: We also attach letters or pictures to a few people. And we are still debating what Christmas card to send out this year.

Blah, sounds like work.

I prefer a box of generic cards. My family is used to my "seasons greeting" cards now.

I'd rather send and receive cookies with a small note than a card or a letter.

However, since I have nobody to send or receive anything to/from, I'll be missing out on that.

Yeah, and now he has a public announcement system installed. I have to listen to him say, "Please don't park in my neighbor's driveway." about thirty times a night, seriously.

The thing is a ridiculous fire hazard, he has a CCTV system installed, and he has his own Transformer (complete with its own telephone pole). Supposedly it is for charity but I think he pockets a large percentage of his take each year.

This guy actually rennovated his house so he could put more stuff on the roof. Talk about killing the resale value.

Unfortunately, I learned about this house after I purchased mine.

I feel for you, man.

my neighbors aren't that bad.........they aren't very intelligent though so the odds of their lights catching their house on fire are.......well, if I could take those odds to vegas I would be rich.
