What day do you think the week starts on?

I was talking to my father earlier, and i said something about the week beginning on Sunday, and he said "I think Israel is the only place where the week begins on Sunday." To which I replied, "And in calendars."

So, I was wondering what day of the week NSers thought the week begins on.

About half of Latin America considers Sunday the beginning of the week and the other half Monday. In Mexico it's Sunday, and that's what I still consider as the start of the week for calendar purposes.

In practical terms all I care is that Sunday is the end of the weekend :(

The week doesn't "start", because it has never ended. That's right, folks, the first week in recorded history is still going, and may continue to go on for all eternity. All this business about Monday's and Saturday's is just an illusion being used to conceal a conspiracy based on a lie wrapped up in an enigma surrounded by libel dunked in a vat of slander and swirled around until dark-brown with lies.

On one hand, I have something on my wall (calendar), based on similar documents written hundreds of years ago that say the week starts on Sunday. OTOH, I get a reasonably large sum of money deposited into my bank account every other Monday.

As far as I'm concerned, large sums of money trump hundred year-old documents. The week starts on Monday!

I went with "Sunday, because the calendars say so", but it's actually more to do with language - the week here in Iceland starts on Sunday, because that's the name of our days. What's called Tuesday in English is called "Third day", Wednesday is "Middle-of-week day" and Thursday is "Fifth day" (Friday is "Fasting day"). Some bishop, a few ages ago, decided that it was terribly un-Christian to have the name of heathen gods in the names of the days (Tuesday = Tyr's day, Wednesday = Odin's day, Thursday = Thor's day, Friday = Frigg's or Freyja's day), so he just went ahead and changed it to something a bit more Christian and unimaginative.

Well, for Tuesday to be the third day of the week, and Thursday to be the fifth day, the week's gotta start on Sunday, right?

According to Christianity, Sunday is the seventh day making Monday the first day of the week.

"Officially" Sunday is the first day of the week. Maybe it serves as a buffer to Monday.

According to the business world, Monday is typically the first day of the week as well.

Sunday

Look Monday in Portuguese is segunda-feira which translates as "Second market".

So, as a second market is clearly not the first day of the week, then the first day will be when it would be the First market. This is the day before the second market. Hence Sunday (Domingo) has to be the first day of the week.

The rest of the world that speak other languages can debate this all they want, but the Portuguese speakers have a clear and unequivocal answer.

I reckon the only reason that the americans have weeks starting on a Sunday is that they are capitalist pigs. You see, Monday and Friday tend to be the busiest days (because you won't be working at the weekend and have to prepare for two days of not working) and you never have enough space to write down everything you have to do. So if you have the weekends days either side it gives you extra space to write down what you need to do. American calendars are capitalist inventions to make sure they can squeeze as much work out of you as possible.

I've never really bothered with weeks since I became a student. The days just roll into each other when you have five of them off a week.

Well Sunday is considered to be a part of the weekend so it doesn't make much sense to consider that to be the beginning of the week as well. And yet since the calendar is designed like that we often do. It would make more sense to consider Monday to be the beginning of the week, but I dont really care.
