So far in Victoria, fires have razed more then 150 000 hectares of bushland, and temperatures are expected to exceed 37ºC (98.6ºF) over the weekend. Add to this a decade of drought, and it is clear that things are going to get much worse .

Today, the sky is cloudy with smoke. The media has a tendency to exaggerate events, but is it possible that fires over the next few weeks will go down in Australian history as worse even then the Black Friday bushfires?

Oh, and thank you is due for New Zealand for sending support.

Because they're sexy.

The bushfires are really bad at the moment. I took some photos today, because Melbourne is shrouded in smoke. It smells like everything is burning.

We had the same thing on a much smaller scale last week in our neighbourhood.

Sometimes I wonder whether Australia was ever meant to be inhabited by humans. The place seems to be giving a lot of hints.

The colour of the sky & the smell of burning in the air really reminds me of Ash Wednesday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_Wednesday_fires) in 1983.

It's things like this that make me glad I live in a place that's all but surrounded by 28 quadrillion liters of freshwater.

Of course, it is really damned chilly out at the moment, so maybe I'm not so glad.

Maybe it's because our winters are wetter, allowing the vegetation to grow, but drying out again in time for summer. Also, because of the drought conditions of the 2-3 years, the state is incredibly dry.

Aren't massive wildfires fun? We had a whole bunch of them a few years ago here in Colorado, a couple near where I live. The scars are still there, and will be for a few years yet. Hope people escape safely.
