I did something stupid and I need help.....

I was passing down my PC to my kid so I wiped the hard drive and reloaded everything, only I didn't have a disc for the DVD player that was on it, and didn't copy it properly and now she has a DVD reader but it won't play the DVD's because it can't read them.

I know one of my 1500 movies at least has a free DVD player software thingy on it, but I am not sure which one(s) and I don't want to go popping them all in to check it.

So.......do you guys know where I can download a free DVD player thingy? or do you know of a movie that has one on it that I can check so I am not flying blind through my collection?

The DivX thing someone wrote about earlier sucks, so don't try it.

you know I have been working on trying to fix this for 3 weeks right? I can't find one that isn't a "trial version" or one that's not "cracked"

I need legal.

why would I ask something before I tried to figure it out on my own?

Because you work 80 jobs and don't have time to find the answer on your own?

You wouldn't go to jail for just DLing one cracked program. They only go after major downloaders and even then they will go after the uploaders before the downloaders.

I only have 3 jobs now thankyouverymuch.......

although after quiting 5 of them I am still working the same 60 hours a week

uh....because of the nature of one of the jobs I still have it would be very easy for me to get into trouble if I had something on my PC that didn't belong.

VLC is a beast. Handles DVD’s and pretty much all video formats. Plus, if for some bizarre reason you’re not using foobar (http://www.foobar2000.org/) for audio playback, VLC does the job fine.

Is it a driver problem or a player problem? I don't quite understand. If it is the former, drivers are free on the internet, though some may be hard to find, if it's the latter, that isn't really a problem at all as there are media players out the ears.

I am not 100% sure, she was shady on the error message, and when I tried to open it in Windows Media Player it wouldn't read the movie.

She wouldn't let me download Real Player as she is "fundamentally against it" whatever that means.

Right now she is pissed at me because I couldn't get Ubuntu to work on this PC and she misses her Linux from her old one and she hates Windows.......

freaking kid.

hold on and I will try it again and tell you what the error says.

I am 80% sure it's not a driver issue, I remember downloading all that I think.

Edit: It says I don't have DVD decoder software installed.

As the programming director for my school's Anime Club, I've learned a deep hate of DivX. The damn thing makes the whole product twice as difficult (especially since, unlike VLC, it requires that we violate computer rules to get it on the computer when they do routine wipes of individual software and pull the network wire) and is clunkier and more buggy.

Real Player and Quicktime are sanctioned, borderline malware. Get Quick and Real Alternatives from free-codecs.com

I don't know why she is fundamentally against them, but I am fundamentally against any program that adds itself to the boot registry any time it is started.

It says I don't have DVD decoder software installed. [/I]

Strange. Probably missing some sort of codecs.

Very smart. Real Player and QuickTime are similar to not-too-dangerous viruses. They take their place in boot/start-up thingy, slows down your computer; does few annoying things with your media files. General nuisance and I should add that Real Player is quite unstable afaik.

I suggest prefering any other media program any day on any computer.

What version of WMP do you have. I have v10. I don't really use it except for WMP files... I forget their extension. I don't think I've ever downloaded a codec for it, but it seems to play my DVDs fine. I just think the full screen mode sucks which is why I don't use it.

If you have WMP v10 then maybe you need to check the drivers for the DVD player are up to date... maybe...

If they come after everyone who has pirated software, they won't have room to jail people with $10 of pot.

Okay, she is awake now, and she said she doesn't like Real Player because it adds itself to the boot registry, and she doesn't like Quick Time because of the same reason plus last time someone downloaded it on to her PC (her old one) it downloaded I-tunes, slowed down her computer, and sent her a bunch of spam from Apple.

Dangerous felons, all.
there are governmental agencies who have the right to look at my computer just about whenever they decide they have a good reason, so it's not a great idea for me to have anything illegal on any of them. Even if that weren't the case, I don't think stealing is very Christian-like.

I don't feel like read through 3 pages of sympathy and bad advice just to check that no one already told you how to fix it, so this should work. It's what I always do when I have hardware with no drivers.

Open the computer up. You might need a screwdriver, but most PC's these days can be opened up with a butterknife or strong fingernails. Try to find some sort of product code on the DVD player. If you don't recognize what you're looking for, write them all down.

Google each code in quotes with "drivers" outside the quotes until you find a likely candidate that you try with success. Even if the site you get is in a language you don't understand, or even have the software to display the alphabet of the language you're looking at, you should still be able to find the "download now" button. But of course, if you find a site in English with the name of the DVD player you're trying to fix, that should be your first choice.

I've never had a problem trying to get driverless hardware to work that way.
