Has anyone else seen Pan's Labyrinth? What did you think?

Do you think that the gruesome, violent scenes (especially the bottle scene) were added to contrast with the fantasy scenes? Or just for realistic effect? Or was that the contrast...
Do you think there was a parallel between the RL story and the fantasy? i.e., a parallel version of the left vs. right wing struggle?
