Where Have All the Bookmarks Gone? =(

My computer just crashed (some browser hiccups that shouldn't really have caused a crash, but eh) and now that it came back on, everything's alright but all my bookmarks are gone.

I must have had over 100 on there and now I'm appropriately sad. :(

Any tips on maybe recovering them? Slowly spelled-out, idiot-proof tips? I'm using Netscape 7.2 as a browser and no, I don't want to switch to Firefox.

Thank you very much. *sniffle*

I don't know from Netscape but I would think they'd be stored somewhere on the disk. Netscape has a history list, I imagine, like IE? You might start there. In the meantime, consider yourself hugged.

They're gone. It's a REALLY bad bug in Mozilla-based browsers that's yet to be fixed - occasionally, without explanation, after a crash, it'll delete all your bookmarks and settings. There is no way to recover them.

I'd assist, but I cannot condone the use of Netscape. I just cannot.

Especially a version that is an entire major version out of date. Upgrade to 8.1.2, at the very least.

Are you being serious or just pulling my poor unsupecting leg? *I would post my distrustful-looking smiley but the link was in my bookmarks :(*

It does have a history list, but I just checked and it only shows the sites I visited after the crash.

If The Mindset above is right, I'll totally have that hug now. Thanks.

I don't know if there is a way to obtain them after losing them. I have had that problem with FF at least 4 times. So for bookmarks, I just put the sites i like on a notepad document, in case of crash, i still have it there somewhere. I'd suggest that.

See how vital this is now?

Especially a version that is an entire major version out of date. Upgrade to 8.1.2, at the very least. Well, I tried to a few days ago but it wouldn't work and made everything all wonky so I uninstalled it again.

Or abandon it like the rest of the world...

... anyway, Netscape 7 stores its bookmark.html in C:\Documents and Settings\[Windows Login Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\PROFILE_NAME\ or some such folder. See if it's still there and reimport it.

I just can't judge you too long, wytyg. I'm soft that way. But repent! Repent I say!

Yikes, I guess I've been lucky so far. Yesterday I went to a gaming site that I regularly frequent and a media screen popped up.. I got a firefox message saying the media thing had performed an illegal operation and that it was strongly suggested that I inform firefox. Afterwards I couldnt even open firefox, but after I did a reboot it was ok. Would suck to lose bookmarks.. I bet I got 500 or more marked.. and that's after I went through and deleted many of my conspiracy, zionism, communist and other ideology and history folders. They probably had 200 or more in them.

I hope you can find a way to get your bookmarks back WYTYG. If you do find some info on how, put the link in here pls.

You've simply allowed your computer to exceed its station, and so it presumes that it has the right to act in a manner most unbecoming. I suggest hitting it with an axe to restore your authority, or perhaps executing several other, less valuable appliances in order to demonstrate your authority.

You should do this one...just start kicking the refrigerator and looking back at the computer..."You want this to be you? Do you? Well?"

I am afraid that, at this stage, merely abusing the fridge won't work, it must be destroyed in a public and violent manner. Though it is most regretful, history has shown us again and again that the hearts of household convenience items are won more by fear than by love.

I tried that but they're not there. There's one file that has all the "generic" bookmarks the browser comes with (that noone ever uses) and it has exactly 10 of my personal bookmarks.
There's another somewhat bigger file with a .bak ending that I can't open because it's apparently a backup of a lost file - I'm guessing that would be it. Damn.

BTW, the file that comes after the ...\Mozilla\Profiles\PROFILE_NAME\ (the latter is simply called "default" on my computer) and that contains all the cache and backup files and whatnot is called "bjaznaie.slt". Is that a legitimate name? It sounds so.... virusy.:/
Because when my computer checked its drives after the crash it showed several things that were "not connected" and "not allowed" or whatever the phrasing was, and this "bjaznaie.slt" was one of them.
Or was that just it telling me that a few things in that file had gone bye-bye?

It is a legitimate name according to here. (http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/manual/bookmarks.html) Actually, it's in that folder your bookmarks are supposed to be.

To read the bak file you have to remove the bak extension and replace it with the proper one, in this case "htm" or "html" (if it is indeed bookmarks.bak).

There's no way of knowing if everything there is bye-bye unless you try to see if it truly is.

There is a feature I now use CONSTANTLY.
"Bookmark Backup"

Under the Bookmark link at the top (Which should be a nearly universal arrangement of: File -- Edit -- View -- Go -- Bookmarks -- Tools -- Help

Well, under that Bookmarks there will be "Manage Bookmarks" and thenyou'll get a new "page".

On that page you'll have the arrangement as before:
File -- Edit -- View -- Go -- Bookmarks -- Tools -- Help

This time go to "File".
Under that in the drop-down there will be IMPORT and EXPORT.
EXPORT the Bookmarks to a seperate HTML file and store it.
Then, after it happens AGAIN (cause it will) IMPORT that list.
Remember to update it as well, at least weekly.

In Fact!
Why not try a search for Bookmarks.html and see if you can find a containing folder and there might be some in there dated as the system does THEORETICALLY backup the list as well.
Then you can revert to either: a day ago, a week ago, or a month ago (or NEVER if you foolishly told it not to keep a backup or use a "history cleaner")

My computer created backup is really out of date but it is there: bookmarks-2006-08-10.html

Hmm, I'll remember that next time it does something bad. Conveniently, I have an old, non-working, non-plugged-in fridge in my kitchen that I use as a cupboard. I could carry the laptop into the kitchen and kick that fridge really hard, and then open its door and show the laptop that I just killed the fridge. Knocked his light out, so to speak.
Think that'll work?

Wouldn't really know. Only thing I vaguely remember is that Netscape is what our school computers used.. and those days were really evil internet days, so... once again, I'm left to feel my grounds for disagreeing with you for dignity's sake dwindling fast..
