I'm currently trying to get rid of something called Virusburst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virusburst); it's pretty nasty.

Yes, I know it's cool to bash the popular product and support Apple, but grow up.

A while back, I suffered a horrible invasion. Multiple spyware, adware, virii all attacking at once. I watched in horror as they took over my computer, ripped it to shreds, destroyed everything!

Then, a bright shining light, in the form of http://www.free-av.com/ appeared. Used it to get rid of everything except the adware, which was knocked off by Spybot search and destroy.

Dunno what specifically I had all in there, but it was a boatload.

Worse virus I encountered was actually a combination of Virus and hardware mistake.

the Virus, a common, irritating but not harmful virus somehow managed to get written in the boot sector... so when the virus detector found it, and tried to remove the virus, it ended up rebooting the pc before the virus could be removed. so imagine...

PC turns on.
Virus detecter detects virus.
Tries to remove virus.
PC reboots.
repeat...

I don't know the names of them, but on my home computer I had a hijacker that would take over my Internet Explorer and rout it to a page selling a spyware remover. I eventually cleaned that one out, but it took me off the internet for a while. Someone used my work computer once and the next day it started sending out tons of emails which prevented me from working. Had to format the hard drive and re-install windows. Luckily I had my important files saved elsewhere.

Anti Virus is know fun, I miss the times when you actually had to try really hard to fight the virus. I can't remember how though.

Does anyone remember how to get rid of a virus without anti virus?

I can't remember the worst, but, I just had a really stupid one.

An exe file on my desktop that I didn't even try and run, and I haven't run for a couple of months suddenly had a trojan in it according to my AV scanner... which I didn't even run.

It is leaving me very confused and sad because I need that program to run a game I adore.

I'm just cleaning up the remnants of that, it's a fucking bitch. Need SmitFraudFix, Spybot S&D, and Lavasoft Ad-Aware. AVG Anti-spyware, Trillian Housecall, Bit Defender online scanner, Kaspersky online scanner, and Pandasoft online scanner don't hurt. (I say you need the first ones because you CANNOT get rid of it without SmitFraudFix and both Ad-Aware and Spybot have removed essential parts of the infection.)

Clean boot, find the file, delete the file.

I've run three programs that have yet to get rid of it; but I'm confident that "SmitfraudFix" will.

It does, it is specifically designed to remove this particular infection. It takes the infection out, but I just had Ad-aware clean out half a dozen registry entries for the trojan associated with it.

That helped me.

Wow, you're right. SmitfraudFix is fucking EFFICIENT. I'm saving this for next time.

It's only for that infection. You have to use SmitFraudFix because the virus set with VirusBurst creates some sort of process that is unable to be stopped without the Process.exe. It didn't show up on any of my process detectors and booted up in safe mode.

I didn't install on purpose this time either; it came with a codec. And I might as well keep it, it's worth it.

I've never had a virus on my computer, I'm not sure if that's through good management or luck, but based on what I've seen on other peoples' computers I would bet its largely due to good management, some people just have so much crap on their computers, half of which they have no idea what it is. The only thing close was a piece of adware that affected IE, which was simply a kill process + delete job.

And perhaps be more carefull selecting what to download and where from.
Then again, maybe I'm just getting old.

How can you tell when you have a virus?
The only way i know is when i run anti spyware programs through my machine from time to time.
That was quite bad tho cause i got someone else to do it... and that means they can see the names of the adware.... which usually tells them what sort of porn site its come from........

MS Blaster, the only virus I have ever got. It forced Windows to reboot every so often. Once I had found out some more about it, I removed it manually.
